A Wedding video
« on: January 20, 2010, 06:50:13 AM »
soo. . .for those who know I work with a photographer, for those who dont, well now you do.

point is, wedding season isnt too far off and my boss once said "im interested in doing video sometime soon"
sooo lately i've been having this thing . . .I want to borrow a camera from my school ( professional ) and go to a wedding with him, have him charge what. . .2000 dlls more to get video (with his name only he can charge like 6k easily) but since its my first. . .say we split half n half.
I take video and do all the editing, burning, shalala. we present it all as a package for his customers.

I do a couple of weddings and I can buy my own camera, get experience, charge more.

thing is . . .

I've had all this toughts for a wedding video but . . .What do you actually put into a wedding video?

im thinking:

-a 15 minute summary of the whole thing (i wouldnt pay 2000 dlls for  15 minutes of a sumarized version of my wedding)
-a 3 hour long extremely boring video of "interesting" things that happened

say we go split, 60 minute video, perfect!
what to do on it?
should i leave it as is? should i cut off all the sound and put a soundtrack on the back?
anyone that has seen/had a wedding recorded care to give me some tips? some examples?

I have in mind the basics:

- Groom/bride getting read, music in the back? or should i put in the conversations?
- ceremony, cut off music "i pronounce you husband and wife" music goes back on
- arriving at party. . .then do I leave the party music or put my own soundtrack overlayed?

Perhaps you should ask your family / friend's families if they have a wedding video that you could watch?

I think I have only seen one wedding video, but it had a interesting beginning that I have used on some home videos and some of my friends videos I have edited for them

The first five minutes of this wedding video was Pictures of them growing up with simple things about what they were doing at the time captioned in the video and it was kind of a roadmap so to speak of how the couple ended up with each other.

hows about you talk to the guy you work with who as you said is experienced with it.

Usually a wedding video has multiple options. Usually the come in tiers. starting with the bride getting ready, *most people leave the groom getting ready off cause it takes them all of 5 minutes* ceremony, toast, cutting of the cake, and first dance and some of the reception. then the next tier up you add more and the next you add more.

And you add more money each time you need another cam operator. Any time you want the groom and groomsmen and bride getting ready you need two camera men. You dont want to miss anything running around between dressing rooms. And some venues are spaced very far apart, any time they want multiple angels. But just so you know almost everyone wants 2 person point of view of the ceremony. No one wants the camera man walking around. So you need two people one to capture then entrance and the other to film the ceremony. then one to catch grooms face and one to catch the brides face as the face each other.

Filming a wedding is really a two man job all the time.

And the number one thing is you dont make the options the bride and groom do you just add a dollar figure. When you meet with them you get a feel for what they want and ask them questions. Ask if they want a soundtrack adding to the background. Or if they want the people talking. ask how much editing they want. You usually show them quick samples of a wedding with background noise and of one with a soundtrack.

no portfolio. unless i show someone else's work. Im working on it, as I said probably will charge a really low fee and ask for their opinion afterwards.

@mgz
the "experienced" person I work with is a photographer, he has been thinking of getting into video a little (thats where i come into play) he's got a name (3 yr in a row best wedding photographer) so I think he can raise the value of a video recording quite high (his top-end photo pack is 9.5k USD)

@arveene
my mother never had a "wedding" she wasnt into that, just a small ceremony. both my aunts had weddings but they live nowhere near me.
I asked my mother about their videos she said "its kinda booring when they are filming all the tables of people you'll probably never see in your life again. Kind of gets interesting when its your table, then goes back to booring"

she said it was around 2 - 3 hrs long. . .

Idk ill see what I can work out! thnks for the comments so far tho.

i would google some wedding videos on the internet and view some peoples videos maybe go to a few large places sites and view portfolios. Maybe go to a company who does wedding filmings and ask to see their a demo of their work and say that your looking to get married you know make up some good bullshit without committing anything.

Watch what others have taped, what’s good or bad, missing - do a hard critique of them and make notes.
Stage various types of situations with friends or stand ins so you get the feeling of what’s going to come out in the video, what you THINK you are seeing through the camera is not the same when replayed.

In a real situation, you do not have the option of redoing an event.

Practice - critique, again, and again....

If you are thinking of this as a long term investment -
I am seeing more Colleges are providing courses in film and video production; College near where I am at has created a new department, the Department of Film-Video and Media Studies.

Also another thing you might wanna do is borrow a camera if you can and do it once or twice for free and have people you know who know a little about film review them give a copy to the people for free go over it with the photographer see what he thinks of it. etc etc. Try it a couple times.

Use as many animated transitions as you can when editing the video.

That was a joke. Have you ever seen all those old videos with the crappy blue screen mosaic and wipe transitions in every possible direction? Hysterical.
