Firefox 3.6 has been released.
« on: January 21, 2010, 07:39:49 PM »
Pick it up at firefox.com

From my own personal experience, it's fast. Just as fast as chrome. It also uses less ram. Both of which, is awesome because I can't live without my plugins. Especially adblock+. Which actually blocks the ads, instead of just hiding them like Chromes version. It also blocks a lot of flash ads including ads in youtube videos, etc... Here are some brief comments about it from people trying it out, comparing it to chrome etc:

I'm just wondering, can you watch the videos at imdb.com with adblock+? And if not, what do you do, whitelist the entire domain?

I'll trust ya on this one.   Hopefully it's better than 3.5.  Been holding out with an older version that I kept the installs for ... because 3.5 was garbage for me.

Nothing.

So, does anyone know of a 64-bit version of firefox?

Dang, I love Firefox already and this new version is just amazing. I don't understand why my friends still insist on using IE ::)

I guess I'll try upgrading to it later.

<Rambling/Ranting>
I honest to god preferred 2.X to 3.5, though. 3.5 was just glitchy as fuck sometimes for me. Maybe it's because I go extremely heavy on the tabs (I have had hundreds of tabs open before), and that's just something that most people don't do, so they didn't quite design it for that. Quite frankly, as sad as it is, version 2.X worked much better for having lots of tabs open. 3.5 (at least on my laptop) just eventually got so annoying to use that it almost made me want to downgrade, but then I remembered that I can't use my profile folder, since 3.X and 2.X had different profile folder formats (or something). Long story short, I wasn't a happy camper.

It's working better on this new desktop I built, but any browser that honestly can't run FAST on this processor/ram has problems. I hope 3.6 patches some of that shit up.

To be honest, the only real reason I stick with Firefox is because of Adblock. Every other extension can make it somewhat more convenient but overall doesn't make this browser any "better". I've heard of that noscript thing, but I've never found a legitimate purpose for it (ever). Do you really need that much protection?

Basically Firefox just has a bunch (at least a few) of infuriating glitches that just love to mess up your (maybe just mine) browsing experience, and most of the time they're not very prompt about fixing any of it. It's just annoying... but as long as they have Ad Block Plus, I'll stick with em. *sigh*

Cute, huh?

Really?  I found the entire 2.x branch to be slow as fuck, and was much happier with 3.x (and 3.5 especially).

Nothing like the days of Firefox 0.9, though.

Only problem I have is that IE Tab 1.5 doesn't work. And it's no longer being developed. But for those who loved it and want something like it for 3.6 get Corel IE Tab.

I just got it and it works great.

Unfortunately, there's no full version there. Only RC2 is available.

Here are some brief comments about it from people trying it out, comparing it to chrome etc:

i got it earlier for the mac.  it does seem lighter and faster than 3.5.  i assume you are using AdBlocker to block all the ads?   mine is customized and blocks every ad for any site i have ever visited.  chrome may be fast but is it wholly insecure.   the geniuses at google are great at compiling ad word logarithms  but not so much so at programming code for os/browsers. security and stability always trump over speed.   i mean who the  fuck ever worried about an extra .1000th of a millisecond.  only if you work for the military, stock-trading consortium or emergency services.   my main problems with firefox are twofold:  resource management and the ability to save image file types correctly.  i have found on two wallpaper sites in particular that images sometimes get corrupted and i have to use Safari to save the images.

but for secure transactions nothing ouches the fox.

i am curious what you guys/ladies think of these themes.  i have been playing with a few of them and while they are kinda cool looking i'm not sure that they aren't too distracting.

strangely enough typed in safari.

back into firefox.. let's see..... i found a anime one.
they should offer a "laughing man" one.   i am partial towards the abstract, music and retro ones.
quite a lot of them are absolute artistic tragedies.

Yeah a couple of them are pretty bad. There not even centered correctly, or the picture is stretched to fit the frame and looks terrible.  :-\

And there's a couple of laughing man ones. Only 2 that are decent. I really love This one.

Once a PPC G5-optimized build of 3.6 surfaces, I'll give it a shot, but for all versions up until now Firefox has felt far too disjointed from the rest of OS X (since it has fake the UI with XUL rather than using native elements). Firefox is also unable to use OS-wide goodies like the dictionary* (see note on the bottom of this post), services, and other various things, also due to not being a native application. I don't believe it even makes use of native text rendering and antialiasing, but rather Cairo or something, so text on pages in Firefox looks distinctly different than it does in any other application. It may sound minor, but it's a major annoyance when you've become accustomed to using these things anywhere at any time.

*Under OS X, Command-Control-D pops up the selected text's dictionary definition in a little bubble WITHOUT launching an external app as long as it's either English or Japanese. It's unbelievably handy and I use it constantly.

Thing is macs just haven't been the same since they switched from Motorola chipsets to Intel. I mean back in the day, macs were the only computers that could handle large scale video production. These days almost any video production you can do in a mac you can do in a PC, especially with Adobe Premiere. Although I do have to admit that Final Cut Pro will 9 times out of 10 be the superior video editing software of it's kind.

FF still seems to be using a bit of resource in comparison to chrome... but I agree... It's fucking fast. As long as this keeps up and no memory leaks, I'll be happy.
