For me it all depends on the story.
I dont like when its stupid/illogical or childish(as in a character does something severely retarded, or the creators view is so immature that it really annoy me). In fact, if a series is like that i usualy stop watching it.
Allso i dont like when series just stop in the middle of something, and i never get to see how it ended. It might not affect my view of the series, but the ending still sucks.

The best ending i can think of is when i get that feeling of bliss from a good series. And then theres no more episodes, and i hunger for more.

Berserk's ending were fairly interresting, cant remember when i had that feeling last.

as I understand Berserk anime did not have ending...well I guess you was refering to manga
I don't know why but I could never bring myself to watch the whole Berserk, I always whatched the first part and after that forgot about it, done it quite a few times. I know that it is supposed to be good anime, and as far as I saw it it was, but eh, should watch that thing finally >_<

as for the endings:
Unexpected ending is what I like, otherwise it's boring.

Everybody goes insane!!!

Texhnolyze has a destructive ending...

this what I like in endings :)

The best ending I can remember, the ending that made most impact on me, as I still remember it after only seeing it once is ending of Serial Experiment Lain. Thou it was kind of good and kind of happy ending, but there was not quite happy Lain and her sister that was the only one left out after all the time/event changing and so on. It was sad. "happy", destructive, reconstructive and someone was insane. What can be better? :D  (think I should watch that anime again)

Hmm, I can remember any good unexpected ending right now, there was this one 25-27 ep anime about space and two brothers fighting all the time and killing each other at some point and then the bad one turned good only in last ep...the ending was super sweet and so on, but I was thinking that the good one will stay and survive not the bad one, as he was bad to the core. Oh well not really something unusuall, but it was quite unexpected for me. and I think there was some insane person dying also involved. Oh, the bad brother help to drowe her trofy wife into insanity and she died, or something like that. Dar cant remember the title of the anime.....

...Men are so necessarily mad that it would be another twist of madness not to be mad...

I were talking about the Berserk anime. It ends abruptly, the manga prolly is alot longer. Its the way the anime ends thats kinda special.

shit, why the hell did I check this thread. I've been watching berserk at Uni before classes begin. About 3 episodes in the morning and one between classes.

Now you kinda spoiled the ending for me.  :'(

I made sure not to click the spoiler, but just the fact that you said it has an abrupt ending kinda takes the surprise out of it.

Kinda like how surprised I was with the ending of first Code Geass series.

I prefer whatever the directors give me. To quote 'Skip Beat'

We might all have different preferences concerning how the anime ends (sad/happy/insane :) ) , but it is obvious that we all want the story to properly end.

One thing I dislike is open endings. Especially when it is obvious that the creators are dragging the few final episodes just to prevent a conclusion (like Hikaru No Go) . It becomes more annoying when - after all the dragging - there is no proper ending even in the sequels  :D

It is of course the most annoying when there is no ending and no sequels like GTO  :P

err ya the anime ending for berserk kinda ruined it for me, i was loving it up till then. I considered checking out the manga back in teh day but it was too far along and ongoing. Then i heard the guy basically went on hiatus for years, but suposedly came back recently? anyone know the status of the manga these days? is it done? still going? did the guy finally finish it =P

to Nikaido.. cmon man how is that a spoiler? He just said it was abrupt and crappy, thats not a spoiler any way you look at it

Lain.. it must have not been that great an ending because i cant even remember what it was o_O I saw it a long time ago and actually have the DVD's but it never made a big impact on me i guess. Hell i cant even really remember the story at all, just that it was trippy. I do remember it had a bitching intro though. Maybe i should rewatch it at some point

whhaaa mushi-shi has a butchered ending? i was looking forward to that i heard its very episodic and weird. Kinda like kinos journey.  You do say you liked suzaks ending though, and i hated the way that series went after the halfway point. Actuallyt he main character really brought that show down. He was a total idiot and basically a creepy stalker

Gungrave, which you mention as a good ending is a perfect example of me enjoying a series as long as the ending fits witht he story. I love that series and the story/history between brandon and harry is awesome. The ending was very sad and hard to watch for me but it fit in the context of the story.

i was pissed that

different people remember different endings :) I don't remember around 99% of anime endings :D the endings I can remember most of the time are - and life went on the same way :D

I prefer the darker, more bittersweet endings, where the character(s) accomplishes something he/she set out to do and yet lost something irreplaceable along the way and the character is left to pick up the shattered pieces of his/her life.

Or those endings where just everything goes to hell. Nothing goes right, and everything is lost.

Something like the Ciel path in the Tsukihime VN. Or something as devastating as NANA and Ga-Rei Zero.

Mushi-Shi doesn't have much of an ending either way. The last episode is slightly different from the others, but not different enough to create a conclusion, for better or worse. It certainly doesn't make the series less worth watching, since most of it is episodic and standalone.

I'm with inuyoukess, I like the bittersweet endings. Endings where things are mostly happy and positive, but retain a lingering sadness or loss. Among them:

Pita Ten
A Little Snow Fairy Sugar
Samurai 7
Fafner
This Ugly yet Beautiful World
Kino's Journey (although it's mostly an open ending)
Gurren Lagann
Azumanga Daioh
Aria the Origination
Rumbling Hearts
Princess Tutu

a little of topic, but I would like to see Samurai 7 redone with a different plot and similar ending. Despite the nice tids and bits, incredible potential was screwed with that kind of plot imo.
