The best ending I can remember, the ending that made most impact on me, as I still remember it after only seeing it once is ending of Serial Experiment Lain. Thou it was kind of good and kind of happy ending, but there was not quite happy Lain and her sister that was the only one left out after all the time/event changing and so on. It was sad. "happy", destructive, reconstructive and someone was insane. What can be better? :D (think I should watch that anime again)
Hmm, I can remember any good unexpected ending right now, there was this one 25-27 ep anime about space and two brothers fighting all the time and killing each other at some point and then the bad one turned good only in last ep...the ending was super sweet and so on, but I was thinking that the good one will stay and survive not the bad one, as he was bad to the core. Oh well not really something unusuall, but it was quite unexpected for me. and I think there was some insane person dying also involved. Oh, the bad brother help to drowe her trofy wife into insanity and she died, or something like that. Dar cant remember the title of the anime.....

Lain.. it must have not been that great an ending because i cant even remember what it was o_O I saw it a long time ago and actually have the DVD's but it never made a big impact on me i guess. Hell i cant even really remember the story at all, just that it was trippy. I do remember it had a bitching intro though. Maybe i should rewatch it at some point

different people remember different endings :) I don't remember around 99% of anime endings :D the endings I can remember most of the time are - and life went on the same way :D

I prefer the darker, more bittersweet endings, where the character(s) accomplishes something he/she set out to do and yet lost something irreplaceable along the way and the character is left to pick up the shattered pieces of his/her life.
Or those endings where just everything goes to hell. Nothing goes right, and everything is lost.
Something like the Ciel path in the Tsukihime VN. Or something as devastating as NANA and Ga-Rei Zero.

--- Quote from: kenshin-dono ---whhaaa mushi-shi has a butchered ending? i was looking forward to that i heard its very episodic and weird. Kinda like kinos journey.

Mushi-Shi doesn't have much of an ending either way. The last episode is slightly different from the others, but not different enough to create a conclusion, for better or worse. It certainly doesn't make the series less worth watching, since most of it is episodic and standalone.
I'm with inuyoukess, I like the bittersweet endings. Endings where things are mostly happy and positive, but retain a lingering sadness or loss. Among them:
Pita Ten
A Little Snow Fairy Sugar
Samurai 7
Fafner
This Ugly yet Beautiful World
Kino's Journey (although it's mostly an open ending)
Gurren Lagann
Azumanga Daioh
Aria the Origination
Rumbling Hearts
Princess Tutu

a little of topic, but I would like to see Samurai 7 redone with a different plot and similar ending. Despite the nice tids and bits, incredible potential was screwed with that kind of plot imo.
