I use my 60" HDTV as a monitor. I find it's just about right.
Beware, massive awesomeness will result if you can get it to work. Essentially you need decent hardware.

One other warning. Once you start, it is painful going back. After using a 73" DLP TV for my monitor for a month, I had trouble going back to my 22" Samsung SyncMaster 2220wm

I have a 49in sony sleak what hardware would i need?? plus it uses that 3 pin converter will it still work?

The graphics card is the point of focus. Basically, you need a GPU that can support the TV's resolution, and actually has a way to properly transmit the data to the TV.

The monitor I have is ASUS VW246H HDMI, they're nice: http://www.newegg.com/product/product.aspx?Item=N82E16824236049

Oh and 24" widescreen is a lot bigger than a square one... it's like two of them side by side almost.

Depends on what you plan on using it for, hell I would love a 32" or a pair of them sitting on my desk. but I that would be fore 1080p anime and photo and video editing and graphics art.

*mumbles something about a 73" DLP as his 2nd monitor

Warning : Massive Awesomeness may ensue

Once you start regularly using those larger sizes, the smaller ones seem unbearable mediocre for entertainment purposes IMO.

I can't stand non IPS panels.

Dell 2209WA that I have is definitely my recommendation for anyone interested in a responsive and awesome color reproduction monitor on a budget. The NEC and the Dell Ultrasharps(IPS versions) are just awesome although they can be pricey. Just my personal preference. Some are fine with TN which is unbearable to me on big screen sizes since anything after 22" seems worthless since the angles are terrible.
