I'd use illustrator since it was designed for that purpose.

Ive tried both, and I perfer photoshop out of the two.

You dont have to switch programs when you need to do something in raster, and as far as i know you can do everything in ps that you can do in ill.

Photoshop was never designed with the intention of doing complex vectors in however. And do you  think that if the two were identical Illustrator would exist?

Hey! While we're at it lets do layout design in Photoshop instead of InDesign since Photoshop happens to have the text tool too!

If you're looking for a start and can only get hold of one, use Photoshop. If not I'd say get both, they're really not that much work to switch between.

I was lucky enough to learn them both at the same time :P

Illustrator can be your best friend if you learn to use it right.

Let's not argue about which program is better for what. That's what got the last image thread locked.

I started working on a Canaan picture today. I have about 2/3 of the lineart for it finished, still need to smooth the edges a bit and add the gun and hand to the picture. Here it is so far:

(crappy forum resize...right click>view image for undistorted)

interesting how you do one stroke at a time.

I keep everything in one shape.

So far it looks good, but I would redo the shoulder, make it one large shape rather then 3 smaller ones. The points of intersection at to noticeable. It created 2 jagged points.

i agree totally.   certainly you can draw paths and select items in PS but the sheer tweakabilty (just invented a word) is unsurpassed.   i think what throws people is the learning curve  attached.  it is not immediately intuitive to a PS user in the beginning.

you should vector that in Illustrator.  looks good but i would straighten the lines on her shoulder a little.

No need. I can vector perfectly fine and easily using Gimp, but again let's not get into which programs are better because it gets these topics locked. The lines for the shoulders aren't anything finalized, just a starter line because the background was almost pure black and I could barely see the outlines. I'm going back and adding in the real lines for it, adding in the hand and gun, etc.

I personally prefer Photoshop to Illustrator for most projects simply because the sheer control you have over every single pixel of the image. Certainly Illustrator is a very capable program, but at least for a good deal of what I do, it takes significantly more time and effort to get a similar (same is impossible) result as I would have in Photoshop.

It should be noted that I do not leave vector curves vector, though. After they're finalized I rasterize them.
