What do you use to watch Anime?
« on: January 25, 2010, 07:04:26 PM »
This isn't your usual software question (MPC-HC btw), i'm talking screen and playback here.

For example:
I watch most of my anime, streamed off my mediatomb server to my LG BD390C Blu-Ray player connected to my Samsung 42" LCD TV.
I have to convert some of my anime using Handbrake to H.264 MP4 to get full smooth playback, and sometimes i have to perform magic to get the subtitles to work, but watching it all on a bigger screen with surround sound (on the releases it's available on) is definitely worth any hassle.

Does anyone else jump through hoops with their content before they watch it?

I don't, since I have my TV acting like a second monitor. But I only use it to watch videos or to keep the task manager accessible in case a mod crashes one of my games and alt-tab doesn't return me to the desktop (happens with GTA mods).

I usually just watch it on my laptop or desktop, but I might connect it to "our" HD TV with a simple HDMI cable when I'm visiting back home (not sure how many inches it is). I've only done this for films though. At my friends' homes we'll be watching stuff on their projectors (sometimes animation, but not Japanese anime *sadface*).

I honestly just enjoy watching my anime on the PC screen. It's not like any of it looks overly awesome on a bigger screen anyway.

Some of it does, if it's from a blu-ray source, but the main point of watching it on a big screen is it's a lot easier to share :)

Since i have a small room i gave away my old box monitor and use my 32" TV as a monitor => Play File -> Bed -> wireless keyboard+ mouse with 2.1 Speakers or Fatality Headset with extension cord -> Awesome anime watching experience :D
Thanks Enzie!

Also, since I use a tube television some videos I've downloaded actually look better on it, since the pixels  aren't as easy to make out on it. This is caused by the blur that most (if not all) tube televisions have. I'll tell you this, the Dual-Audio version of Trigun (#anime-mx) looks a hell of a lot better on it. But then it was added almost six years ago. Who knows how long since it was encoded.

Oh yea, I also have my computer's main audio output hooked up to the TV (RCA jack), while I have the PC speakers hooked up to the headphone jack in the front of my computer case. But really, I've given up using the speakers (except for when playing games) since my TV's speakers produce much better sound quality.

Either from the DVDs themselves played on my Samsung DVD player to my 27" LG TV, or from my 13" macbook (usually on to the TV again, unless I am in the bath and then it stays on the macbook screen).

Laptop - 17,3" (when I am too lazy to set it up)
26" widescreen (when I have time and are going to watch movies or several episodes)

CCCP+MPC-HC (because everything else sucks)

Downloaded material: Desktop PC, 17" CRT monitor, 2.0 stereo speakers
DVDs: Zenith DVT216 DVD/CD receiver, 5.1 surround sound, connected to 27" Samsung DynaFlat CRT with component cables

Only real hoop I have to jump through is changing subtitle styles via MPC if I want to relax on the couch instead of sitting at my computer desk. I did use to use ZoomPlayer, before it got taken out of CCCP.

Got any old fansubs on HDD/DVD/CD? Please take a look at this thread.

Or you could just buy a 1920x1080 computer monitor and hook your surround sound system up to your computer for the same effect with zero effort. That's what I'd do anyway.

At home I use an ASRock Nettop 330 connected to an Optoma HD65 DLP projector displaying on a 105" screen. The soundsystem is a Sony HT-SS1300 5.1 surround system.

To see what we use at our anime club check this thread http://forums.bakabt.me/index.php?topic=22362.0

I use PS3 Media Server to connect PC to Mitsubishi Electric 73" TV, with virtual surround sound effects. Actual Surround Sound System is currently being planned.

My PC (Athlon II X4 620 on a 785G board) connected to a 24" LCD BenQ G2410HD. For sound I have an Edifier R351 (it's 5.1 but I have it in 2.1 because I don't have a place to put the other speakers in my room and I don't want to hassle with the cables). When people are sleeping or I can't make noise I use headphones, Philips SHE-9500 with a 5 meters extension cord to the PC.

When I'm out I use my netbook, an Asus 1000HA. Up to 720p (in that screen) it's fine :). Once I tried connecting it to my monitor at 1080p and there you can't even watch 480p. The scaling of anything to 1080p is too much for it, so you have to use the 10" screen or an external one at no more than 720p :-\. I want the Nvidia ION and have my little portable HTPC ;D

PC to our 56" Samsung DLP, sound is yamaha reciever and jbl 5.1 speakers(any more is overkill honestly). Nothing overly flashy but gets the job done nicely. For dvd's we have my sony bluray but we dont watch as many dvd's(seen em all atm).
