Broke down and finally got all of my anime DVDRs and CDRs in sleeves and alphabetized. I'm not saying I've downloaded a lot but...

Each drawer can hold 150 discs. ;D

I envy you. All my anime is stored on an 1tb external hard drive. I loose sleep worrying about if it ever crashes or breaks.
But I just don't have the time to put it all on disc.

The problem with DVDs is that the medium decays over time. I strongly suggest using DVDaster to create parity files for each of those. Just a month ago I found that most of my old DVD+Rs had spots of rot and thus had unreadable files.

O_O That's a lot of anime.

I just download, watch, and delete. Unless I really like the series, then I'll save it to a dvd-r.

Say what?  Physical rot on the disc?  I've never heard of anything like this.  My old stuff is fine as long as there isn't a huge scratch running the length of the shiny stuff........

I too have CDs and DVDs that I burned a while ago (Elementary school... so... over 10 years?) That doesn't have rot but shitloads of scratches and they work fine.

I swear, rot only occurs if you store in a shitty way. Humidity of where you live probably has a big deal, as well as the humidity in your home. At least that's what I think. Also previous threads have discussed that the brand you use makes a huge difference as well. (Vertabim, Sony and Maxell? being the better ones I think)

Back on topic. I started burning at one point too... but after making like 4-5 data discs on 70 ep animes... I got tired and lazy. So currently I think I only have like 50 discs actually burned. I also burn OSTs from time to time too. When I get bored of them, I just give them to friends who I feel might enjoy the orchestral music.
This is your home now. So take advantage of everything here, except me.

Of course. There are two types of data loss. Physical damage and chemical reaction. I'm no expert but that's what I have read through the years. I think especially the chemical reactions are a huge problems for state archives.

I knew nothing of the outside world. I was just a frog in a well.

Do you happen to know what the chemical reaction is?  I'm curious.  Maybe the oils in our skin from handling the disc?  I always thought CD/DVD was foolproof except for physical damage.

I made a quick search because I don't know them myself. A simplified layout of a CD/DVD is the following: a polycarbonate disc as the substrate. A thin silver/gold layer is sputtered on the substrate and then there's an organic dye in which the data is stored. The last layer is a protective one.
What I found were chemical reactions between UV-rays and the dye. Humidity in combination with heat/warmth can reach the data storage layer and corrode it even though the polycarbonate layer should be waterproof.

I knew nothing of the outside world. I was just a frog in a well.
