+Look At My AlienWear Schematics+
nstgc:
@Kannato Its way too expensive.
Go to either TigerDirect or Newegg (I preffer the later) and punch in the parts you listed and then ask yourself if they are just raping you in the ass or if you are actually getting what you pay for.
blubart:
you could most likely get a notebook with comparable performance from another brand (for example asus) for under $2000.
the list alone is just silly:
Lunar Silver - Anodized Aluminum - i just hope the area where you put your hands isn't made out of this material - otherwise it will be gone in a matter of months.
...
Alienware M17x 240W A/C Adapter - O M G they actually ship an A/C adapter with their notebook? incredible!... and really needed considering the 1h battery capacity.
...
Name Plate Engraving - the most important part
Personalized Nameplate Trigger - yea, whatever
AlienFX Color, Plasma Purple - it's not just purple - it's AlienFX Plasma Purple!!!
...
the rest of the stats are decent hardware components (some similar to what i have in my 3 years old ultra portable 11") and lame software giveaways.
Natheria:
Oh, i knew when i looked at this thread late last night the OP was gonna get torn a new one for posting this.
At that price you could get a desktop with better specs and still have enough money left over to get almost any other laptop that has comparable specs to that Alienware. That is so grossly over priced it's not even funny. In fact that price tag is making me rage a little bit. The fact that people actually pay that for Alienware's pretty lights makes me rage even more.
Protip: Don't buy Alienware. About a thousand of those clams your going to fork over are just for a brand name that was edgy and cool... a couple years ago.
There's a difference between spending a lot of money on a computer and looking cool doing it, and spending waaaay more than you should for the hardware and looking like a total douche to everyone else for your trouble.
Slysoft:
I built a computer that is better for just under 2k back in January. And nowadays you could probably get the same thing for 2-300 dollars less than what I paid.

--- Quote from: mgz on January 26, 2010, 03:58:33 PM ---@ iindigo, people dont always want an ultra portable high battery life laptop. Sometime want a mobile desktop, plain and simple. The fact that many places you can use a laptop allows you to plug it in is just another thing.
I know if i was getting a laptop i would probably like it to be a portable desktop because most of the places i would use it at would let me plug it in and the extra speed and functionality it has is why i would buy it.

You beat me to it. Essentially I was going to say, "It's ok if you need to port it around to LAN parties and stuff instead of a desktop, or it's easier to take to college if you need a gaming computer than a desktop, and isn't as "weak" as other laptops.
But I seriously think the above is going to have ventilation issues. (At least you won't freeze in dorms during the winter months...)
Personally I would never touch Alienware. It's focused in such a way that seems... pointless for the money dished out. However, Voodoo seems to have some interesting ones at times. (Like their ultra portable that fought against Sony and the MBA which has since been easily defeated by this: http://www.sonystyle.ca/commerce/servlet/ProductDetailDisplay?storeId=10001&langId=-1&catalogId=10001&productId=1007050&navigationPath=32009n100299n100724 )
EDIT: My wrong. The Envy 133 is one badass ultra portable. But that price is just as bad ass. And the battery life isnt as great as the above.
But for half the price... I could buy this (even though I don't want it) http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/SYCTOProcess?catalogId=100051&storeId=20153&langId=-1&LBomId=8198552921666067651&IRTrack=HomepageSpot3
Pushing the specs to the above still only holds me at about 1800.
By the way, that's CAD, not USD either.
(Sorry, I was using Sony due to the "Aesthetics oriented" statements made by OP + "Price Value" )
