Massive game purchase, am I crazy?
« on: January 27, 2010, 09:08:12 AM »
So a (summery of a )little back story before I jump into this.

Sold some stuff when I was younger
Realized later in life that I wanted it all back because I'm a collector
Decided to go ahead with it

To chronicle my endeavors I've made this topic to mark off my purchases for this year and see exactly what I'll be getting myself into. Every month I will total up what I've bought and post it here. Now lets get this started shall we? I've already finished out January and since its the end I will just start here. This will not be limited to just console games and such, there will be other things in here as well. I'll also comment on things that I think need comments. As for the total I won't go into exact change and what not, I'm to lazy to look at receipts so I will be rounding.

Am I crazy or just a die hard collector? I'll let you be the judge.

January
Dreamcast console - New off Amazon for $90. Why? Simple. The Dreamcast was amazing and I want to play my Sonic Adventure on it again. I made it a point to make this the first purchase because it was something that I can never forget. It will get here this week on the 26th. When it gets here I will post the list of burned games.
Dreamcast VMU - Off Amazon for $20. Obviously for saving.
Memorex CD-R 50 pack - Off Newegg for $20. I feel ashamed for doing this but a Dreamcast requires no drive modding at all. Burn a game and play. When my Dreamcast gets here these disks are what I will use for the games.
Bayonetta (360) - $55
Darksiders (360) - $45
Final Fantasy 13 (360) Preorder - $5 down. I don't know if this should go here, but whatever.

February
Tales of Vesperia (360) - $20
Bioshock 2 (360) - $60
Star Ocean 4 (360) - $30
Legend of Legaia 2 Dual Saga (PS2) - $5

March
Final Fantasy 13 (360) - $60

April
Nintendo 64 console - Used, and in very good condition, off Amazon for $30. I realized that earlier I said that I wouldn't get another console but... I just couldn't resist. It had some wear and tear on it as well as the games but it was an easy fix with some 91% Isopropyl. One of them even had a guys name written on the top...
Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (N64) - $11
Star Fox 64 (N64) - $9
Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask (Collector's Edition Hologram Cover)(N64) - $21
Jet Force Gemini (N64) - $3
Donkey Kong 64 (N64) - $9
Doddy Kong Racing (N64) - $6
Banjo-Kazooie (N64) - $7
Golden Eye 007 (N64) - $8
Bomberman 64 (N64) - $10
Starcraft 2 Collector's Edition Pre-order - $10
Pokemon Soul Silver (DS) - $40
Resonance of Fate (360) - $60

May
Super Street Fighter 4 (360) - $40
Halo ODST (360) - $55

June *Steam sale*
Left 4 Dead 2 (PC) - $11
Garry's Mod (PC) - $7
Altitude (PC) - $3
Audiosurf (PC) - $3
Osmos (PC) - $3

July
Persona 3 Portable (PSP) - $44

August
Starcraft 2 Collectors Edition - $95 + $5 preorder.
Blood Will Tell (PS2) -$7 While I was on vacation in North Carolina I was walking with my friend to a Gamestop and he was looking around for some DS stuff. I was pretty bored so I guess this is what possessed me to ask the clerk if they had it and sure enough it was my lucky day. I've been looking for this rare game for a good 2 years and some online asking prices were starting at $130 so to find it at this price was definitely something I'll probably never see again.
Shadow of the Colossus (PS2) - $45 I picked up this hard-to-find item on amazon. Its SoC... does it really need to be explained? Original black case, not Greatest Hits.
World of Warcraft: Cataclysm (PC) - $5 preorder
Final Fantasy 14 Collectors Edition (PC) - $10 preorder.

September
Kingdom Hearts (PS2) - $16
Kingdom Hearts 2 (PS2) - $10 I got lucky finding it this cheap thats for sure
Xenosaga Episode III (PS2) - $24 Have the first 2 and actually didn't know they even made a 3rd one.
Fire Warrior (PS2) - $7 A lot of people really didn't like this game but I did and I wanted to pick it up again.
AR Tonelico: Melody of Elemia (PS2) - $31 I've heard a lot of good things about this series but I've never played it so I'm giving it a go and I'll probably pick up the 2nd one at a later date.
Final Fantasy XIV (Collectors Edition)(PC) - $60 I'm not even going to comment on this so lets just leave it at all...

Octomber
.hack 1//Infection (PS2) - $15
.hack 2//Mutation (PS2) - $19
.hack 3//Outbreak (PS2) - $16
.hack 4//Quarantine (PS2) - $49 'Very good' condition off amazon. I'm wondering why thing was the most expensive out of the 4 but whatever.
.hack G.U. Vol. 1: Rebirth (PS2) - $25
.hack G.U. Vol. 2: Reminisce (PS2) - $23
.hack G.U. Vol. 3: Redemption (PS2) - $65 seriously what the hell makes these final games so much more expensive than the others?!

November
Dark Cloud (PS2) - $13
Dark Cloud 2 (PS2) - $30
Trinity Universe (PS3) - $60 Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeea don't ask
Call of Duty Black Ops (360) - $60 I'm a huge Call of Duty fan and MW2 was a pile of crap. Thankfully this one did not disappoint.

December
Golden Sun Dark Dawn (DS) - $34 I absolutely loved the first 2 games and the wait for this one almost killed me at one point...
World of Warcraft - Cataclysm (PC) - $45

---
Current Grand Total: $1464

theres nothing wrong with collecting games if you really want them. But to be honest you should probably start with collecting things for new systems unless you just want them to look good on a shelf. I have a decent amount of money invested in video games but I dont really bother buying ps2 or older games anymore because I just wont play them anymore. Seems a waste to buy something you wont ever play better off spending the money on newer games I mean there are alot of newer games that are coming out that are fun no reason really to be stuck in the past.

Why would you be crazy? More like a lucky fuckery than anything. At least you still enjoy a lot from games. But 240 dollars? That's only like 4 "new" games. That's nothing. A gaming rig costs about 3-5 times more than a console. Unless you're saying you're blowing 1000 and going to blow another 1000 more... then you're still very, very sane.

Ahaha I'm very much aware of computer costs but if you really shop around you can get a pretty good machine for ~$800. I have a desktop that I made from when I was in high school and its still going strong. The only thing I've changed in it from the years is added hard drives, 2TB to be exact. I have a laptop for my gaming needs which was also acquired threw favors and they weren't easy. It pays to know people.

To be quite honest though I don't do to much PC gaming anymore other than the occasional Warcraft 3, Starcraft or League of Legends game and some Counter Strike if I'm ever in the mood which is rare. I got quite a few bundle deals on steam games when they go on sale, its practically a steal if you ask me. PC gaming is covered for the time being so there won't be any of that on my list. But the since my gaming machine is a laptop instead of a desktop is pretty convenient when I go places and we decide to play a few games.

As for today, I have nothing to add to my list but I did do some scouting. I went to a local Gamestop and looked at the used rack and here's what I found:

.hack Infection
.hack Mutation
.hack Outbreak
Dark Cloud 2

All priced at $10 in practically new condition which is odd for being marked used but I'm not complaining at all. I'll be picking up those soon enough. Today I was also reminded that I need to actually finish the .hack series.

It's not crazy to buy a DC.  It's crazy to spend more than the $20 they go for used, and the $1 the VMUs sell for.

A little to late for that now though.

TBH, if you really want to play the game and it's not easily found. Who cares how much you pay. However, if you only want it for archive purposes or "collectors" purposes, then maybe waiting for a better deal is wise.

It was only the console that I wanted to buy brand new, everything else will be in the used bin or from flea markets and such.

Where do you download your DC games? The whole Dreamcast scene feels kinda dead so its hard to find the good stuff.

So I finally got my Dreamcast in the mail. It was snowing hard all weekend so I wasn't planning on getting it but low and behold.

I was finishing up some work and my doorbell rang and I opened the door to a pleasent surprise on my door step. I wish I had taken pictures of the opening process since I don't know why but it was fun in its own way. I like opening boxes like a kid on christmas morning what can I say?

I hooked it all up and tested it out, works great and I burned VirtualOn on a test CD. It worked to say the least but I think I messed up something since there was no sound at certain parts. In a fight there would be sound but on menu there's nothing.

Other than that it works great, its a blast from the past. The hard part now is figuring out where to put it.

And in other news I finally got my pre-order down for Final Fantasy 13. Stoked as hell for this.

Nostalgia might not be as fun as it used to be. And you overpaid for the CDs. You could probably get them locally for around $10.

Why buy new Dreamcast. as soon as its out of box its considered "used" :P Locally through like Craigslist you can pick a bundle up for much less.

edit: I guess it was fine :P since you can burn stuff, if only new console's were so easy. *cough*360 with that wave stuff*cough*

You're not crazy, you're just a die-hard collector. I lost my N64 and all my games a long time ago, so I bought myself a new one and lots of games for it about a year or two ago. People said I was crazy for buying an old system like that, but I've put hundreds of hours into the thing since I bought it. Who's laughing now?

Right now I'm working on getting an NES, I never had the great fortune to own one of these little beauties. I had a SNES instead, but it just isn't the same. That, and the SNES is long since broken(stepped on!). So, I'm on a quest to get a working NES in good condition. If you love something, who cares how old it is, let the good times roll!

I didn't really feel like looking to honest. Plus I needed them for other things as well, not just these. Its $20 so it wasn't a big deal, but yea I see what you mean, I saw the same thing for $12 at bestbuy over the weekend. /sigh

*high fives back* I use to be in the 360 modding business and I even did some people's around my town. But ever since the ban wave before Modern Warfare 2 and almost losing all my precious saves being tied to that Hard Drive I've since left the Xbox modding scene. I can still do it if people ask me to but I personally won't do it again even after getting away with it for years. I've accepted the banning consequences and have moved on.

Ah yes the N64. I was thinking about that as well but decided against it. I have a lot of free time on my hands but to take on another console and upcoming stuff? That would just be overkill.

The question is have we already reached the limit of perfection?

So nothing new exciting over the last few days. Of course since its winter there's no yard sales or flea markets or anything but I did come across 2 things today when I was out running some errands.

I figured I'd head into the local play-n-trade to see what they had and they had Tales of Vesperia up used for $20 so I grabbed it. For some reason or another I've been having some trouble trying to find Vesperia and I'm not quite sure why...

On the second note, Star Ocean 4 International edition is releasing Febuary 9th for the PS3. I played a good bit of it on the 360 barrowing it from a friend but I gave it back, so I'm definatly looking forward to finishing it with new characters.
