I'd rather carry around my trusty ole' rock, I can multi-task.
(click to show/hide)
It also "JUST WORKS!"
But really there are keyboards and usb extensions....but kind of kills the point of the portability of the I-pad really. If you want to use a keyboard and the usb port you'll just have to carry the I-pad, keyboard, and usb extensions! SO CONVENIENT!

I also fail to see a problem with iWork. Exports for the win. You can't expect a non-MS product to save Word files by default. I personally export to RTF, though, unless the document has some feature that RTF doesn't support... I don't want to further propagate MS Office as something that is "required".

As for the lack of connectivity, I'd say this is made for people who don't need it. Granted, it's been ages since I owned a laptop, but when I did (back in 2005, even) I rarely if ever used the physical media drive and ports on the thing.

Also, I don't know if it was mentioned anywhere, but if you have a bluetooth keyboard it'll work fine with the iPad. No need for an additional purchase. And yeah, carrying a keyboard does kinda kill the point of a tablet, but it's a bit more versatile - that is, if you don't need a keyboard you don't have to have it out. Same could be said for those funky laptop/tablet combos, but to be honest, I can't bring myself to trust having the screen mounted on a single flimsy hinge.

Sure it's fun, but can I break stuff with it?

iPad cracked: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/ipad-jailbreak-iphone-unlock-jailbroken,news-33136.html

Nothing amazing really, but it is interesting to see how fast certain products fall at the hands of hackers ^^

Users are reporting that the iPad easily overheats after 10 minutes in the sun: http://img686.yfrog.com/i/xjg.jpg/

Quote from: golem.de (translated)
Apple has specified the iPad for runtime temps of 0-35 degrees centigrade - below and above this is outside Apple's warranty. Ideally it should be used at 22 degrees (room temp). According to Apple's support website, the same is the case for iPods and iPhones. The iPhone 3G also switches off when overheated.

The fact that we're already hearing of overheating issues in early spring, leads us to assume that the heatproblems of the cpu and casing are more severe than would be expected. Apple recommends keeping the iPad away from warm sunlight and not to use it in a heated up car, specifically because the batteries could take permanent damage.

Another loller, they should've released their iMelt in Autumn, that way it could've sold well for two whole seasons before customers realized how it's possible for Apple to make it so thin  ;D :D

Well, it wasn't marketed as an on-the-go device anyway.

It was aggressively marketed as an ebook reader, a product class which includes use in direct sunlight as one of its most important features.

Most official examples has it never leaving far from the coffee/kitchen table. Heck even jobs put a mock livingroom on stage. It was the sheep that kept expanding it's alleged capabilities to justify the $500.00 price tag and lack of features. Guess what, it does EXACTLY what jobs said, you use it from the sofa, how about that!

I still can't believe they put a cellphone chip and clocked it to 1Ghz without adequate cooling. We're they relying on the metal backing to passively dissipate the heat? Heatsinks work both ways, they may have accidentally turned the ipad into a solar still.

I dislike Microsoft Word.  Long ago while working part time at Kinkos, I get so many problems of people bringing in their word docs and complaining that it doesn't look the same on their computer.  Such expensive software that is ill suited for professional printing.  I have to give them software to convert to PDF.

no it works just fine for professional printing. Problem being that people use different size screens and change settings and borders and font sizes and what such.

I'll never send anything to print in anything but pdf. The thought alone makes me shudder. But then I use InDesign and sometimes work with fonts I have to convert to outlines to print.

I'd use word if I wanted some beautiful word art ;)
