I was under the impression it was going to be called the iSlate... not iPad.

many people were, like a person at the BTTF: Hill Valley forum. But I guess they decided to change the name, like Nintendo and the Dolphin (Gamecube).

I wouldn't be caught dead with this thing. =/

I assume I'll be seeing the whole fad once again. And for an extra bit of negativity, why not?

Btw... the real thing sort of looks like an oversized domino.

worthless device IMO.

They should have just come out with a reader.

I personally would loathe have a nice shiny 10" screen. Thats one of the big flaws with things like this SHINY SCREENS SUCK BALLS. I mean aside from the obvious limitations and overpricing for it being an apple touch screen with severely limited functionality

It's not so much that it will necessarily be a bad device, on the contrary it will probably be a decent thing that people will gladly pay too much money for.

The negativity comes from the possible fact that this thing will be overmarketed, be renowned as an artistic marvel and do the same things other devices already do and have done, yet every developer and fool will flock to this thing. Developers because they will obviously earn money and fools because they think they need it, or simply because it is a popular toy. I can't think that more than a handful of people will actually need this thing.

The article I posted above may be slightly satirical, but I won't say it's an unthinkable scenario. Personally, I'll settle for my laptop.

I'm not entirely sure I like it at this point... will have to wait until I am able to play with one myself.

One thing it definitely has over traditional PC tablets is its portability factor - 1.5lbs and .5" thick vs. 6+lbs and clunky...

Yeah, the 8.9", 2.2lb, Fujitsu P1630 is so 6lbs and clunky.  ::)

What screen resolution is this suppose to have anyways. And will it support players needed for mkv and ogm files?

Don't forget he's comparing similar specs and hardware. So he's thinking one of those Toshiba tablets from 2002 which has a max processing power speed of "shitty"

I'd much rather have a $300 refurb Pentium-M Fujitsu Stylistic than the iPad.  At least I'd be able to use it outside during the day.

Kindle?

Everyone keeps talking about that thing, but it's a device I've never really been all that impressed with. It's still not as nice as compact as an iPad, does a hell of a lot less, and lacks backlighting and a color screen. On top of that, it's not really ideal for college student since Amazon's book store isn't really textbook focused. Also, the Kindle won't read PDFs or any other sort of file for that matter, making it impossible to make use of the eBooks one already has.

The fact that the iPad runs an office suite (iWork) is also a nice bonus, allowing students to write notes and such and class.

EDIT: As for comparing this to other devices, I must admit the tablet sector is not something I've been paying attention to. The last time I personally used a tablet/laptop hybrid was three or so years back when I used an HP TouchSmart TX1000. That thing was such a slow, disappointing, overpriced, and expensive joke (especially when running Vista) that it caused me to (perhaps wrongly) write off any other PC tablets ever since. It doesn't help that even now the only tablets I see people using are of the clunky variety.

Either way, I've always felt like a tablet needs to be an all-or-none device. Either be a laptop/netbook or a tablet, not both.

half of the  things you listed  as negatives are things that make it great as an ebook, the lack of backlighting and non color screen and utilization of eink makes the screen not hurt your fucking eyes. Same with backlighting.

*shrugs* Reading from LCDs has never bothered my eyes. CRTs used to, but they're history now (thankfully). Even at night my display is cranked up to full brightness, and I can work like that for hours without any trouble...

Yeah ... the reactions I've seen is:   It's stupid.

They've made a netbook that looks like an iPhone.   At $500 - I question its capability.   Larger display requires more processing power than the iphone - really.   Bigger resolution, etc.   You can't really type with it ... it's a little unwieldy to take the kindle niche ... sure, it might look better though.

I see no design innovation ... it's not really all that creative IMO.

Ok - I admit.   If I could get iPhone on Verizon - I've seen it in action - I liked it.   I would get it if I could get it CHEAP.  ( and I can. )    [ NOTE: I had a REALLY bad experience with AT&T - and I don't like them.   Also - Verizon is the only service that works in our area!   Plus - I have a 2 year contract on 3 lines.   Needless to say - I can't switch to AT&T - even for the iphone.  ]

But this tablet thing -

I kinda don't do stuff that big.

I want an ebook reader ( I LOVE EBOOKS!   And it beats my old pocketpc!  )    But I wasn't really all that ... meh ... sold for the ipad.
Nothing.

Nothing more than a giant iPhone. Runs iPhone OS too. What a fucking joke.
All you have to do is study it out. Just study it out.
