I'm not going to argue too much, but that's not entirely true these days. If you put together your own i5/i7 system with the same specs (including an LED S-IPS display @ 2560x1440) as the 27" iMac, the cost is almost identical. I tried, wondering if I could build a hackintosh version of the 27" iMac for significantly cheaper, and you really can't...

The Mac Pro line is just sad now, though. $2,200 for the base model with no monitor, and the specs are WORSE than that of the $2,000 27" i7 iMac. Who the hell is going to pay for that?

What type of panel does your display use, how is it backlit, and what resolution does it run at? If you try to buy a display like the one in the iMac, the closest you can get is a model that Dell is releasing soon (I think it uses the exact same panel) and sells for $1,000.

I'll admit though, your graphics setup is quite a bit better. Tis probably a good thing I'm not a gamer. At least this model of iMac has a separate card, though, facilitating future upgrades instead of it just being part of the motherboard.

As far as RAM goes, I can make use of the exact same RAM (though Apple, by default, installs the slower standard). The motherboard's max sits at 16GB.

It is a standard LCD screen. Your LCD screen is over kill for me because as a gamer I dont need something like that.

True enough. Even taking the color correctness out of the factor, though, this thing is incredibly sharp and vibrant. Light from LEDs feels easier on the eyes, too.

How long do you figure it will be before old-style florescent backlighting is phased out?
