This interests none of you but....
« on: January 28, 2010, 01:51:37 PM »
I'm posting this thread from on £6000 3D monitor which is on my desk.

It's actually for testing a stereographic 3d render I'm doing, but it made me chuckle that I'm just on facebook and forums on it  :P

So, basically, to make this a discussion - will we get to the point where even things as dumb as web browsers and webpages will be fully 3D (stereo)? I guess it's inevitable....

hmm, 3D monitor? does that mean you don't need 3D glasses?

It's a passive stereo monitor, and as such it needs polarized lenses similar to those you wear in a cinema these days... But the difference to great projector set ups is that it's interlaced with one image to one eye and the other to the other, meaning that you only get half the vertical height in pixels... ie 1080p 3d = 1920*540 for each eye.

Autoscopic screens (where you don't need glasses) are a big pile of wank for now.

^ I see.

Back to your discussion, I too think that everything will be 3D in time. It might sound crazy but people might even have their eyes "modified" through a simple surgery that they won't need to wear 3D gear of any sort - but that is a little far in the future.

Bigger screens, more realistic 3D visuals is what I expect.

It's a bit big.... Come to London and get naked and you can see it.   :D

Unless you're ugly.

Surgery to avoid polarized lenses? That would be completely retarded. Give it time and there will be better and better solutions, anyone getting surgery for such a (currently) quick moving technology would deserve a slap.

I guess now would be a good time to mention that last week I tried on a £30,000 Head Mounted Display, with a 160 degree field of view, with 6 1080p screens in each eye (could only tell the division between eyes, not between the 6 of each eye... It was pretty heavy though!

Ahh, but I'm not interested in sexual favours from you Chiyachan...

Near silicon roundabout  :P

And a 2d picture of a 3d screen would be pointless now wouldn't it?

Though I shoulda got a pic of the HMD.

Saw 2 versions last year of such screens and as long as they make me feel like i'm on a DMT trip i'll pass on it. I think it's going to take a while before such screens are viable options

£6,000? My $1,200 60" TV does 3D (and I use it as a computer monitor).

1200 for a 60" tv? it must be a pretty crappy brand/model.

It's a Mitsubishi DLP. Make of that what you will, but I'm very happy with it.

makes sense then.

DLP is the projector models are they not?

They only have about 9,000 hours of life. LCD's are around 70,000 hours now, and plasma are around 15,000 last I checked.

Not exactly. The bulbs only last anywhere from 3000 to 5000 hours, but it's not like the TV is trash when the bulb burns out. They only cost about $100 and are easy to replace. $100 is a lot for a light bulb, but I can buy several years worth of them and still not have spent as much as a similar sized LCD or Plasma would have cost.
