Buying a new pc ( for gaming) need recomendations
« on: February 01, 2010, 02:45:18 PM »
i've been screwed over by other people for too long, and I'm getting mad.

So I've decided to buy a new pc, specifically for downloading but mainly for gaming, games like wow starcraft 2, wc3:tft, me2. so it has to be excellent. but I don't have the money to be buying the expensive shit , I'm talking about MAJOR TOP MARKET stuff.

E.g I want to spend somewhere between £200 - £500. I know I could find a good pc for this price but;
A; im a total nab when it comes to gaming specs
and
b:im a total nab when it comes to gaming specs
and
c: it needs to have hdmi cable, 3-4 gb ram etc, please help.

£500 is barely enough to upgrade to a midrange system. "A do it yourself" i5 upgrade kit (mobo+cpu+4gb ram) + mid range gpu (£100-150 gpu); that's assuming your have a suitable case/psu and you build it yourself.

Check out PCPerspective's Hardware Leaderboard Budget System. It comes out to $522. http://pcper.com/hwlb.php?guide4=y#guide4

Despite what many people seem to think, you don't need to spend $1,000 on a gaming PC. Those parts will easily play any modern game.

For a marginally cheaper build without sacrificing gaming performance for the games you (OP) mentioned, consider replacing the Athlon II X4 620 with an Athlon II X2 240 or Athlon II X3 435. Fewer cores, but lower cost as well. To see how they stack up in gaming performance, just google for benchmarks (here's the X3 435 stacked up against the X4 620. For your purposes you probably only want to look at the gaming benchmarks).

I don't know what that would translate to in Euros for your region, but low–midrange gaming systems don't get much cheaper than that.

Okay I don't understand any of this stuff, amd intel etc

All I know is

I want something reccomended for gaming XDDDDDD

This is too much.

I'm not the type of person to build pcs from scratch, all i know is that I can get money if needed then go to shops like currys, pc world, comet (uK stores) and buy hopefully the best thing there.

I know I want 3-4GB of ram
I know I want 500-1000gb of HD
I want a HDMI port for an led screen

interms of the rest of the stuff that make up a pc I know their names but i really dont know which are the best or what they exactly do.
Has anyone got the time to explain this (XD no) or is there a website that has a dummies guide to gaming pcs or pcs in general.

ty come again

^^ So far this pc has caught my eye

and these to

http://www.comet.co.uk/shopcomet/product/592951/PACKARD-BELL-IMEDIA-A3520UK/tab/specification#spec
http://www.comet.co.uk/shopcomet/product/599620/ACER-ASPIRE-X3812/tab/specification#spec
http://www.comet.co.uk/shopcomet/product/613797/HP-P6210/tab/specification#spec

I really do think these pcs can do the job, playing games like WOw, Starcraft 2, Diablo 3, mass effect 2, right? ............Right?

Wow, first of, don't triple post. =/

I can recommend my own laptop; Acer Aspire 7540G. I can play Batman Arkham Asylum with all effects on + 1024x768. I had to pay 736,910 euros for it. But it seems it's out of your range. To me it seems what the regulars around here recommend is too hard for you to understand; have you tried just going to a place where they sell desktops and laptops? Try that and ask if you can try Windows Experience on them. This is not something I would recommend to rely on completely, but it can help you in your decision.

The processor in that is quite outdated at this point. The video card is also old and it wasn't that great when it was new. I would not buy this computer.

http://www.comet.co.uk/shopcomet/product/592951/PACKARD-BELL-IMEDIA-A3520UK/tab/specification#spec
crappy video card

http://www.comet.co.uk/shopcomet/product/599620/ACER-ASPIRE-X3812/tab/specification#spec
Decent CPU, but the embedded Intel GPU will barely be able to handle Windows, much less any games. If I had to pick any of these, I would say to get this one, and buy a new video card for it from NewEgg and install it yourself.

http://www.comet.co.uk/shopcomet/product/613797/HP-P6210/tab/specification#spec
No. Just no. The CPU is ancient, and it doesn't even list what GPU it has.

This: http://www.comet.co.uk/shopcomet/product/610542/HP-WE160AA-ABU/tab/specification
Plus one of these: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102871

That'll do what you want, but you could still get a much better PC if you build it yourself.

Thank you for breaking it down for me.
But this one doesnt have as much ram or space as the others, and is in lower price, I would assume the others ones are better? Just speculating, I think i'll take your word anyway. Also what are the downsides to that one you reccomended? and is there one on that website that is worth buying even if it costs more then the one you linked?

Thank you for your time, you're ever so helpful honeslt.y

btw the second link you mentioned would i have to buy that for the pc to make it decent?

It's got enough for what you're wanting to do. RAM and harddrives don't cost that much, and they're easy to install. The downside is the same as any pre-manufactured PC. You're paying extra for someone else to put vaguely described parts together from the lowest bidder. Anyway, that site doesn't have many PCs available on it. The only other one I thought was better was this one that you posted earlier. You'd also have to add a better video card to that one though. You'd have to put a better video card in all of the computers on that site. (Also, for that PC, I can't tell from the picture if it's a full ATX case, or a microATX case. If it's a microATX slim case, you may not be able to fit a real video card into it. Unfortunately, they don't specify.)

btw the second link you mentioned would i have to buy that for the pc to make it decent?
Yes. I've never seen a name brand pre-built computer with a decent video card that wasn't a total rip off. Your best bet (besides building one yourself) is to buy one with the best CPU you can get, and the cheapest video card, and least amount of RAM possible. Then buy your own video card, and your own RAM and install them yourself. Video cards and RAM are super easy to install and MUCH cheaper to purchase separately.

I'm no computer expert but just thought I'd stick a website in that a lot of the guys at the LAN centre I used to hang out at used. (I believe one of my exes works there now too...)

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/

Theres also http://www.aria.co.uk/ and http://www.ebuyer.com/ as well, all of which are UK based and so will be cheaper shipping wise at least.

Thanks, I was having a bit of trouble with the whole UK thing.

This is a good deal. Looks like it's on sale this week >> http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=FS-210-OK&tool=5 It even comes with a good video card.
If you get that one, don't forget to pick an OS.

I want a HDMI port for an led screen
Most systems with a graphics card come with a little adapter that you plug into the DVI port that converts it from DVI to HDMI. Since it is digital to digital it works just as well. In fact, I don't know that I have seen a system that actually has an HDMI port.

I like this one. Since you are not a computers guy, it isn't that likely you are going to be doing upgrades yourself, so I think this is a good one out of the box for your price range. It will handle the games you mentioned. Also, get the 64bit OS.

What's the difference between all the OS? and the 32-64bit thingy? I was thinking 64bit Home premium.

Also what is a solid state hard drive?

Thank you, I might go for this one.
