Resolution won't play on PS3

I convert the torrents I download and save them to my PS3 so I can watch them on my TV, but my PS3 won't play videos with 1280x720 resolution.  If I converted it to something like 720x480 (which my PS3 does play), would part of the image be cut off?  If that doesn't work is there anything else I can do?  Thanks.

Well the PS3 doesn't play .mkv files,so that is a thing to look after.This is the only piece of advice I can give,but I can suggest other methods of watching things on your TV,like the media server or the HDMI cable.

I forgot to say that I convert them to MP4's so that's not a problem.  As for using an hdmi cable, I would if my computer's graphics card had a video-out option but it doesn't.

What type of error are you getting when trying to play the video? Even the PS3 has error messages that points at the exact problem.

Probably the thumbnail is broken and says unknown.

Even on Wifi, if you set the transcoding appropriately, it should work just fine. Especially if it is only 720p. It really is excellent.

Then he obviously did not set his PS3's output settings properly.

Doesn't the PS3 automatically optimize itself for output settings? At least when I do it, it asks if I want it to automatically configure the video.

Even if it ask for automatic, I'll still do it manually.

Looks like I figured it out.  I converted it to 720x480 and it plays fine, but I don't know if any part of the image is cut off, I don't think so though since it looks fine.
