Joke, I joke :D, But not in my top ten for sure

If I could stretch it out some more too like the year 2000, I would have "Perfect Dark" up there amongst the best. Or is 2000 also aloud :-\

Disclaimer: This list is based solely on games Rebs has played through thoroughly, and thus also solely his opinion, not influenced by that of other individuals or polls on the matter 8)

I liked the first Crysis, they need to hurry up and finish Crysis 2 so we can finish the story

Knights of the Old Republic- Bioware is a great developer of RPGs and KOTOR is more or the less the framework for all of them. Some common elements between Bioware RPGs have been a "good" and "evil" meter, the ability to pause in the middle of a battle to tweak your strategy, some of the best story telling in the gaming industry, and dialogue choice with impact on the game world.

Woah... woah...

That is totally wrong.

KotOR is not the framework for "all of [the Bioware RPGs]."

Baldur's Gate and those are the framework. The Infinity Engine, that's where it all started.

The linear nature of your Euclidean geometry both confounds and befuddles me.

And that is why I didn't have any bioware games on the list, they had already done it all prior to this time period, nothing really new was brought out.

You have to remember that most Xbox gamers believe the only games to exist prior to the release of their system of choice were Super Mario Bros, Doom, and Final Fantasy VII.

What story?  Crysis wasn't worth the bandwidth I used to download it illegally.

@Proin Drakenzol
I was thinking about the more recent 3D rendered 3rd person RPG's because they bear a more similar resemblance to where Bioware has stylistically been taking their games in recent times. Sure, Baldurs Gate II had stuff like, romance, alignment, and pause/unpause gameplay that were passed on to KotOR, Mass Effect, and Dragon Age. However, in terms of more action based game play KoTOR is more like Mass Effect and Dragon Age. If you want a world to explore you play Baldur's Gate. If you want to kill stuff you play KotOR, ME, or DA. Also, the Dungeons & Dragons rules that are prevalent in Baldur's Gate were almost completely phased out by KotOR. Finally, since KoTOR the skills system has barely changed. It is KotOR's gameplay, mechanics, and user interface that speaks to me when I play the newer games, not Baldur's Gates'.

@sdedalus83
I played KoToR on my computer and do not own an xbox and am not an xbox gamer. Did you mean to say that I was one of the younger generation of gamers whose gaming experience usually stems from that of a single line of consoles, the xbox and xbox 360 (usually the later)? I can understand why because of the types of games I selected (Halo, GoW, KoTor). I selected the games I did because they contained powerful mechanics that changed the way companies designed their games; regenerative health, cover systems, and alignment impact are still used today, not because I am an uneducated gamer who limits himself to a single line of consoles. Besides, all three games are are available on the PC which is how I played all of them but Halo.

It's pretty good story, if you played the campaign of Crysis Warhead and liked it you would like the original story too.

Oh man. I'm so glad to see Shadow of the Colossus on some of those lists. That game would get my vote as one of the best games of all time.

Edit: Warcraft 3, Portal, Neverwinter Nights, and Counter-Strike would also be on my list for games of the last decade. I'd also note that I'm mostly a PC gamer. The last console I owned was a PS2.
^ That bar maybe Neverwinter comment. Never got into that series myself. I would place CoD4 up there myself too. Its sort of taken over the role of CS for me.

Shadow of the Colossus
Half Life 2
Warcraft 3
Call of Duty 4
Portal

There are others that I liked but I'm not at home at the moment so I don't want to do a full list till I can make sure I am not forgetting anything.

It is sad to see no mention of the Metal Gear Solid series here. Especially 3 and 4.

10. World of Warcraft (pc) (for taking online gaming to entirely new depths)
9. Silent Hill 2 (Ps2) (reinventing survival horror)
8. God of War (Ps2) (making action gameplay addictive)
7. Guitar Hero/Rockband (ps2/xbox360/ps3) (bringing an excellent fusion of music and gameplay)
6. Half-Life 2 (pc) (popularizing physics in gameplay)
5. Crysis (pc) (For being even 4 years old now, a measurable benchmark of graphics intensity for even new rigs)
4. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (pc/360/ps3) (reinventing clan based competition)
3. The Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind, and The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion (pc/xbox/360/ps3) (for taking depth, to all new levels)
2. Shadow of the Colossus (ps2) (redefining "epic battles")
1. Anything BioWare has Touched (making RPG's about the story) (KOTOR, Jade Empire, Dragon Age, Mass Effect ect...)

I got many hours of gameplay out of MGS4. Just because they have 15 minute cut scenes in between a hour or so of game play doesn't make it a movie. I am in no way a fanboy either it was the first MGS i ever played and i enjoyed it a lot. It you haven't really played it which in my experience is most people who call it a movie(and xbots god i hate fan boys) you need to go play it.

Now if you played it and you still think it was a movie well then okay. Ill make sure to not recommend to many games with cut scenes to you.

You can say MGS was cut scene heavy but a movie it does not make. I guess that's my point.

Ive played MGS, MGS2:SOL, MGS3:SE, and MGS4:GOTP.

The first two had the most gameplay period. There were LONG sections of gameplay mingled in with 15-20 minutes of cinematic.

MGS3:SE Got out of control FAST. You would literally Listen to a 30 minute cutscene, walk across the screen which took you ~20 seconds, and then BAM 30 minute cutscene again.

MGS4:GOTP was FAR too excessive... I mean, when you offer save points, in the middle of your cut scenes so people who may have been playing a little bit before work and didnt realize a 1 hour cut scene was coming up... you are way beyond the edge of acceptable gameplay:cutscene ratio.

Another game with excessive Cutscenes like that was Xenosaga... The initial cut scene in the game was like 20 minutes, and then you had like 10 minutes of gameplay, and then an HOUR of cutscene >.>

Im a fan of story... but come on... excessive cut scene is excessive.

You're exaggerating. I haven't played 4, but I have 3, and other than in the beginning and end I don't remember there being any 30 minute cutscenes, and I definitely don't remember there being more watching than there was playing.

Besides, the codec calls and cutscenes are all completely skippable, and if it's your first time through the game they should keep you plenty entertained anyways. I really don't see what the big deal is.

KOTOR1 on PC was definitely my favorite RPG of all time, and I got more hours out of Morrowind + xpacs than I care to contemplate... I think I got more mileage out of Morrowind than any other game I've ever played, barring WoW.
It took an hour to write; I figured it'd take an hour to read.
