Games of the decade
« on: February 09, 2010, 07:13:37 PM »

Oh man. I'm so glad to see Shadow of the Colossus on some of those lists. That game would get my vote as one of the best games of all time.

Edit: Warcraft 3, Portal, Neverwinter Nights, and Counter-Strike would also be on my list for games of the last decade. I'd also note that I'm mostly a PC gamer. The last console I owned was a PS2.

This lists is wrong from the beginning.Cross-platform,around 10 years and just 10 games?Impossible.

It's best games of the decade... not great games that came out in the past 10 years.

However, I'd agree with Half-Life 2 being one of (if not the best) games coming out in the '00)

Also, glad to see Beyond Good and Evil on a list ^_^!

No BG2, wat.

Tbh, I couldn't remember if it was '99 or 2000.

1. Morrowind
2. Halo
3. Fallout 3
4. Mass Effect
5. Bioshock
6. Aion
7. Diablo 2
8. Seventh Cross Evolution
9. SMT persona 3
10. Final Fantasy Tactics Advance

What? There were plenty of great games in the 2000s, I would have trouble getting the list down to 10. (which is why I only listed a few)

Also.. Aion? Seriously? I love the game to death, but I certainly wouldn't label it one of the best of the decade.

This lists is wrong from the beginning.Cross-platform,around 10 years and just 10 games?Impossible.

Agreed. Should separate console / PC at the very least. It wasn't until later in the decade when we saw many more cross-platform games. PC and console used to be entirely separate beasts.

I couldnt help but notice that you have Morrowind as no.1 but Oblivion is left off the list. Whats your reasoning behind that?

Morrowind was far superior to Oblivion.  It was dumbed down a lot

Just a nitpick... the decade isn't over yet. Nor is 2000 part of this decade (or century, or millenium).

The decade is from January 1, 2001 at 00:00:00 to December 31st, 2010 at 23:59:59.999... inclusive.

I don't think I could even pick just 10 games to put on a list, let alone rank them and choose a number 1.

The linear nature of your Euclidean geometry both confounds and befuddles me.

Wait that seems very backwards to me. That would mean that something happening during 1950 took place during the 40s. I know the birth of Jesus marks year one and not year zero, but to count the decades from that point up until today just messes up everything.

I only beat two of the colossus. The story does seem really interesting between the boy and the girl. Thou' I couldn't stand the slow framerate. Worth to beat?

In Denmark we have this TV program called "Troldspejlet" directly translated as "The Ogre/Troll Mirror". They're the most loved TV program about games, books, movies; basically what nerds love the most. They've recently held a poll about the most popular/best game of this decade:

1. World of Warcraft
2. Grand Theft Auto: Vice City
3. Diablo 2
4. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
5. Battlefield 1942
6. Fallout 3
7. The Orange Box
8. FIFA 09
9. Need for Speed: Underground
10. Uncharted 2: Among Thieves

I'll do an utterly personal list where no console game features since I only owned an xbox 360 for those 10 years and none of the ones I played would make a list.

1. Warcraft III, simply due to its custom maps. Primarily DotA.
2. Kana Little Sister, the game that made me love visual novels.
3. Battlefield Vietnam, the fps I've played the most. Averaged 5 play days a month for ~8 months.
4. Shogun: Total War, was a new experience in-between the older rts and 4x I had been playing prior. (Sad alpha centauri was to early.)

And there the list ended. I've played many other games I've liked and enjoyed in that time period, yet none has struck me enough to warrant a game of the decade label. :) Was kind of a surprise for myself that no RPG warranted it in my mind since that is the genre I've played the most games in.

There are too many types of games to list one type "better" than another. However, here are some games that I believe deserve a spot at the top.

Halo- Notice how so many games these days make use of the hp-regeneration thing? Halo made this mechanic popular and was the transition between the old games where you were stuck hunting for health packs to the new games where you could hide behind a box for a few moments and continue the action.

Knights of the Old Republic- Bioware is a great developer of RPGs and KOTOR is more or the less the framework for all of them. Some common elements between Bioware RPGs have been a "good" and "evil" meter, the ability to pause in the middle of a battle to tweak your strategy, some of the best story telling in the gaming industry, and dialogue choice with impact on the game world.

Diablo II- The amount of games that follow the framework of DII is huge and it is easy to see why. An isometric action based game with skill trees that uses skill synergy and pits the player against monsters that roam in packs far greater than their own is just awesome.

Gears of War- The cover system implemented in GoW allow players to be part of the action even if they weren't shooting. For ages players were able to play offensively in shooters but defense often amounted to running away or hiding in a corner where you couldn't see anything.

Joke, I joke :D, But not in my top ten for sure

If I could stretch it out some more too like the year 2000, I would have "Perfect Dark" up there amongst the best. Or is 2000 also aloud :-\
