Dragonball Kai
(1/1)
Takeshi:
So who's also following this?
I started to watch around episode 24 since I had already watched the Saiyan Saga way too many times for it to interest me anymore. I'm following [SD&Taka]'s subs. They're very good. I like their translation, and their encoding is top-notch. I just got up-to-date on their episodes since they had a release spree some days ago. Nice surprise. Though I would much more prefer a consistent release schedule with one epsiode per week. They have Naruto Shippuuden as their top priority so Dragonball Kai is more like a side project. Better than having no one to sub Kai.
A few things I dislike:
- Re-drawn scenes, supposedly the transfer to 720p didn't go well at Toei or whoever did the transfer so they had to re-draw some scenes. It looks rarely good, to be honest, most of the time it looks like crap actually. Even I could draw better than that. During battle the number of re-drawn scenes seems to increase so that might have something to do with it.
- There's even fillers in this version. The scenes with Kuririn being chased by Freeza definitely wasn't in the manga so I'm a bit disappointed by that.
- There seems to be a bit of censor in it. When Kuririn shot a blast through Vegeta, and Vegeta fainted because Dende wouldn't heal him. It didn't look like a bloody wound at all. But this is probably because the show airs on Sundays at 9:00am, and a lot of kids are watching it.
But other than that I definitely like it. Plus, I've never seen Dragonball Z before so it's nice to get a chance to do it that doesn't involve 291 episodes. ;)
Maybe it would've been better with a complete re-make, and maybe not. Would they put as much work into it as the original animators? I don't think so and the feeling of Dragonball would be no where to be found. I liked the OVA from 2008, but I'm not sure if I would like a new TV series like that as much as the original Dragonball Z.
The things I like:
- Fast pace, it's definitely nicer with faster battles and unnecessary crap. Man, it seems the Saiyan Saga contained a lot of crap. Goku's encounter with that princess, Gohan's small adventures. I think that's why it feels like we'll run out of episodes at the current pace - 40/100. I wonder how long the "5 minutes" will be in this edition? ::)
- New music. Though I liked the old music, these sounds satisfies me. There's some interesting ones as the rock/orhestra piece that plays when Freeza pierces Kuririn. Sounds pretty epic.
- New OP and ED. It's a bit of a shame though that they're not re-using the newly animated one, but only changing about 15 seconds of the OP with Goku and Vegeta fighting, and then Goku and Freeza. I guess we'll then see Cell and Majin Buu as the last two. But I guess there's still time for them to make new OP and EDs.
- Re-recording of voices. How wouldn't it feel if they just re-used the old voices? Like shit if they combined it with new music. So while it's not something that I'm not exited about, I'm glad they decided to do it.
I'll edit my post if I think of something else.
P.S. Please don't bash the show if you've only watched a few episodes.
P.S. I can't wait for the Majin Buu Saga.
