Google: Another Experiment
« on: February 17, 2010, 03:06:42 AM »
That's right people, Google is at it again, and this time, a unique experiment, fiber internet to you home, not node, but your home.

Your guy's comment?
Mine is that I doubt it will ever hit where I live but if it does, I'm so in the experiment.

Its American experiment so it doesn't concern me but dam how I want it.

It may be 100 times better than the Internet there but its probably 1000 times better than Australian. I would jump at an opportunity to join.

Like it would ever come around here, I mean we're still waiting for Fiber through SBC. But still, if it did I'd jump on that in a heartbeat.

Some parts of Sweden has had 1 gig connections for home users for several years now. I have never had the luxury of living in a city with it though. :/ So nothing new to me really.

Yeah, that's probably the one bad thing about living outside a big city. Internet tends to suck.

In Sweden small to medium sized cities tend to have the best internet as they are more likely to invest into municipal fiber networks.

I live in a town with 36.500 inhabitants (55.000 in the municipality area counting smaller surrounding villages) and I have fiber right into my apartment, I "only" get 100/100 not gigabit but I can live with that :)

Now if you move to Stockholm, Swedens capital you are lucky if you can get a good ADSL connection...
Memories are meant to fade. They're designed that way for a reason.

I can second this as being true. I live ~ 20 km outside of Stockholm in a different city and less than half the apartment buildings have fiber. Most only have cable or ADSL. I think Lund has the best connections in Sweden due to the University there.

The town [Lund] has 76,188 inhabitants in 2005,[1]  out of a municipal total of 105,000.

Iam somewhat sceptical to Google being an isp. Considering that they make theyre money on advertizement and information gathering.
I allso wonder if there will be any filters for these internet connections.
If they own the network that supply youre tv-channels, phone and internet access, it gives them alot of power. If they build a solid network with high speed, they might allso monopolize the market.

The network iam connected to is upgrading, to 400Mbit by summer. This is just for the private market.

Iam not sure what the price on the connections will be, iam hoping it will be cheap ;D

I don't care if Google is spying on me, I'll just use VPN, I get to enjoy the privacy and speeds.

Then again, I live in a 'City' with some 3000 inhabitants.
And I have 1Gbps fibre.

Yes. At least mine do. For a grand total of (right now) $40 or so per month.

The installation did cost a bit more, but it was sort of unnoticeable since I was paying for a house, the lot and water/sewage etc at the time too... :-)

It'd be neat to have but I honestly don't need anything faster than what I get now. The only thing I don't like about my current service is the cap but realistically I don't get anywhere close to exceeding it.

Given a choice of 1gb service for the price I pay now
or
my current service for a much cheaper price.

I'd go with the second option.
