FF VIII - Actually a very good story?
« on: February 18, 2010, 03:41:07 AM »

Friend linked me to this, I've never seen it.  What do you guys think?

Personally, I disagree, I think that the writer of this argument was trying to find a good story in a game with a mediocre story and bad character development (for all chars except Squall), but it was very interesting to consider.

I loved the story in FF8. It has easily been my favorite out of all the final fantasy's so far. As far as gameplay mechanics worked it really sucked. The draw system was a really bad idea. Having to spend 10-15 minutes on a fight just so you can draw a certain spell to max was really annoying. But as far as the story went I loved it.

I've tried to pick up this game multiple times but I just never could get into it. Here is one of my favorite internet personalities reviewing FFVIII! Very hilarious and had my friends and I laughing for hours.

I was still a kid when I played and finished FF8 so I don't remember all the details, but if the theory in that site turns out to be true, and it was done on purpose by squaresoft (good times huh?), then whoever made it that way is a genius.

Even if it weren't true it's still an interesting interpretation of the story.

biggest problem with him saying squall likely dead is that the ice spear that impaled him was on this upper right side of his chest. Its very likely he was in a coma for some time his wound healed and hes back to normal possibly with diminished lung capacity.

However suggesting that the second half of the game is all a dream may not be such a bad theory if its all a comatose state for the rest of the game. And hes not able to fully heal as mentioned above and his mind is slowly dying.

Good romance, aesthetic, and CGI movies, but weaker overall plot than FFVII. Time compressing sorceress? Weak.

Loved the story, although not as good as VII's. The link does make sense, though I don't necessarily agree with it. If it wasn't for the lackluster combat system and the linear gameplay, I probably would've enjoyed the story even more.

I hated both the game play and story of FF8, and I think that idea is really scraping the bottom of the barrel. The ending showing scenes from his impalement is just coincidence, they were just throwing in CG that had already been made into the ending. Its not surprising that it was one of many clips shown. Plus, it doesn't change the fact that Squall is still one of the most annoying Final Fantasy protagonists ever, slightly behind Tidus.

The Spoony One is awesome, by the way :D

I dropped game at disc 3 ... right before acquiring Ragnarok. Never beat the game. All I know there's some "love" story thou the freaking story itself is confusing enough.

Meh. I'll pass on playing it again. Let alone if they ever will remake it with the big hype after FF VII remake.

Storyline in this was weak.. ok maybe the basis of it weas interesting but the delivery of it was weak throughout the game. Squall was a weak character and was extremely EMO the entire time!! It pissed me off in FF Dissidia, he has a better personality than he did in the game. It was sad..

Basically the storytelling of this game was the weak part. If it had been told better it would have been a great game. The developers decided to focus on graphics (which were awsome) and a crappy new "Draw" system that killed the game for me. I did like the main characters of the game. Zell, Ulticema, and even Seifer. But I could not stand Squall, the chick ( forget her name cause hate her ) you know squalls love interest.

I did enjoy the card game in this series though I think I spent far more time playing this game than the actual game itself. Then again this is the guy who played over a hundred seasons of Blitzball in FFX

In regards to the OP, this is a world in which spells like "life" exist...you can revive people from the dead immediately at perfect combat readiness after they've been shot by a gigantic sword made of energy thats visible from space!!!! So that puny ice spear is nothing.  Anyways, yeah FF8 has a pretty mediocre story.  Good game but come on, the stuff in FF8 is so much more farfetched than any other game story thats based on an earth like existence.  The whole GF's and time compression=weak.

That's the main reason I posted this, superficially, the main story was terrible to me.  I was just playing it to see how it ended for Squall and Rinoa.  It's nice to have a strong romance element, but they needed to put WAY more thought into a story with time travel for it to not completely suck.

Never actually thought about the story in 8 that way.  Very interesting theory.
Personally I never got all that into FF8, and just thought the story was kind odd and confusing - even tho I always thought Squall was a great character..  But if you look at it that way it makes a hell of a lot more since.  Might have to replay it now.

Just remember,  before you criticize someone, walk a mile in there shoes.  That way you are a mile away and have their shoes. :P
