The suit says Lower Merion School District officials can activate the webcams remotely without students' knowledge. The lawsuit alleges the cameras captured images of Harriton High School students and their families as they undressed and in other compromising situations.

Families learned of the alleged webcam images when an assistant principal spoke to a student about inappropriate behavior at home.

The school is so going to lose this case. What exactly is the point of this program? Because it doesn't even sound like that feature has any kind of purpose unless they're running some kind of undercover sting operation. On everyone. Who might do something illegal in front of the webcam. I didn't even want a webcam installed in my laptop.

the strangest thing to me is the location.  i went to college in that area and the average student doesn't need a "free" laptop as the vast majority of their parents are multi-millionaires.   just to clarify that is in $US.   what is the point?   to blackmail money or favors out of the students?

now i can see this happening in poorer areas.  those students actually need laptops. whomever is responsible for this should be fired, stripped of their wealth, and beheaded in public for sheer neolithic incompetence.

btw- this would make a "possibly" good hentai.

Maybe:

1) They initially had it as some kind of virtual classroom feature, but then an administrator or somebody decided it should happen without having to manually allow the connection and then they started thinking it would be entertaining for the teachers to watch?

2) They wanted to have remote testing and wanted to watch students surreptitiously to make sure they didn't cheat (because if they knew about it, it's really easy to get around)? And then they abused the system?

3) They want to uphold the honor and propriety of the school by monitoring student activities?

4) Some kind of sociological experiment?

I'm guessing 2, maybe a little of 3 is the most likely. If the administration allowed it, it presumably had some form of school-related purpose, as ill-advised as it was.

I hear some schools make projects where skype "meetings" are mandatory for the assignment. Failure to do so is an automatic "F" in that assignment. And this shit is Middle school too. Not high school, not post secondary.

I'm sceptical.

The Star is about the least credible news source ever.

A litigious American is suing someone, big suprise. They say it can be remotely activated and thus has been spying on nekkid kiddies.

The guy who got in trouble was probably blazing a spliff while in a net conference and was too dumb to realise someone could see him.

the star is a canadian newspaper and is not a tabloid...there are also 600+ articles about this on google news where the school has admitted that it was possible.

Ah, thought it was the UK tabloid for some reason.

Well, there's a difference between 'possible' and 'done'.

Apparently, it was for helping retrieval if a laptop was lost or stolen. Though the district decided not to tell anyone about this and the webcam was activated on a laptop that wasn't reported missing.

Much more information: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/us_laptops_spying_on_students

And the FBI is getting involved

Quote
The FBI will explore whether Lower Merion School District officials broke any federal wiretap or computer-intrusion laws, said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the official was not authorized to discuss the investigation.

I CAN SEE THE KEYBOARD! THE LAPTOP MUST BE CLOSED AT THE MOMENT!

It's called a GPS tracker... This is BS.

Lol damn, didn't take that into account. Laptops are usually closed and even if. It's pretty unlikely to spot the laptop just with the webcam, if you see a random landscape around. xd
