Apparently, it was for helping retrieval if a laptop was lost or stolen. Though the district decided not to tell anyone about this and the webcam was activated on a laptop that wasn't reported missing.

I CAN SEE THE KEYBOARD! THE LAPTOP MUST BE CLOSED AT THE MOMENT!

It's called a GPS tracker... This is BS.

Lol damn, didn't take that into account. Laptops are usually closed and even if. It's pretty unlikely to spot the laptop just with the webcam, if you see a random landscape around. xd

Exactly. Which is why it's pretty obvious someone is lying out their ass.

But I must give credit to the guy who put this whole thing up, and eventually abusing it.
If the teachers just continued to discretely monitor what goes on and have a good laugh about it instead of calling in and telling off students, this thing would just go on unnoticed by most students.

wow this school is stupid. I can understand the reason why to do what they did but they did it so illegally. First of all the school has no right what any student do inside their home. They can fuck horses and the school can't do shit about it.

Also that excuse about oh we use the webcam to find it lost or stolen laptop. Its called LoJack. Install it and you can tell where the fucking laptop is at all times without seeing a 15 year girl naked

This is the relevant part of your post.

The linear nature of your Euclidean geometry both confounds and befuddles me.

This is surprising how?

This probably won't go to court. It will be settled out of court, someone's going to get ganked by the FBI and this issue is going to disappear into obscurity soon.

if it did go to the court it would mean the end of the school, they would sooner pay an unimaginable money rather that see this courted out.

If they still have the files or they can be recovered then they should be charged with possession of child pornography.
Next time maybe they'll keep their mouths shut.

I remember something similar being used to recover stolen goods before. The point is not to find WHERE the laptop is, it is to find out WHO has it. You remotely activate the camera and try to get a picture of the user.

From a quick Google search, I found a story similar to the one I was talking about: http://www.smh.com.au/news/technology/mac-thief-caught-on-webcam/2008/05/12/1210444306538.html

spying on students, tough with sexy cheerleaders (if any) could be productive, is illegal.

This is only useful if the laptop is stolen AND you want to press charges. Damn useless if the unit is "lost", just as useless if it's stolen but you're not going to press charges.

However unlike your link, that person logged into their own personal laptop. Wheras the district distributed the laptops pretty much for "personal" use. Quite a difference there.
