how good is your memory?
« on: February 19, 2010, 05:14:58 PM »
lol Im sure you were sure this was some memory-test-topic. Nop, just a mere discussion about remembering stuff

How good you are at remembering stuff? Ex. do you need practise something really long until you can remember it completely or do you need to quickly glance it and bang! you remember it even backwards? AKA how good is your memory?

I have noticed that I usually remember not-so-really-important stuff, ex. I practised about 5-6mins pi's (π) decimals about 3 years ago and I still remember about 75 first decimals. :S
Also I have started to notice that I remember various websites (mostly fansub-groups pages) by heart, I only need to view the site once and I already remember that website.

How about you guys? Can you still remember what kind you were when you were young?

they see me rollin', they hatin'..

I can never remember something if it's important, but I can recall anything that's trivial. I still remember IP addresses I haven't used in almost a decade.

The more often I use it, the easier it is to recall.

It really depends on how important I feel it is. I can usually remember things pretty easily but if it gets to a point that I don't use it or feel it's not important I won't remember it as easily the longer time goes by.

I can remember if I understand it, but if it is just a mathematics shit I can remember it but I can not understand it as it is totally useless (yes I am a mathematics hater, sometimes I think I cant use mathematics things I have remembered because its totally idiotic, matter of taste I guess :D ).
As for the rest - it comes and goes as it wishes. Can not remember stuff at one time and can at another. I almost never can remember names or numbers :D

It really depends what it is.  The things that are second nature to me (Like waking up and putting on deodorant or counting my drawer at work or driving)  I rarely remember.

But I'm awesome at remember little things (That is granted... if I'm paying attention).   Important things I tend to forget... but I'll remember everything else that was going on when I was told that important thing... I think I have a severe case of A.D.D. now that I think about it...

I have a great memory for numbers, but am terrible with names. I still remember phone numbers for family and friends from when I was 5, and yet I have trouble recalling the name of someone I was introduced to 10 minutes ago unless I make a serious effort to remember it.

I have terrible short term memory, excellent long term memory, and superb conceptual retention capabilities.

Tell me someones four digit extension and I'll have a hard time remembering it long enough to dial it while sitting next to the phone.

On the other hand I can remember the home phone number of my best friend through elementary, middle and high school six years after he moved out of his parents house and got a cell phone.

I also can remember the majority of rules for pencil and paper gaming systems and, at need, can summon up the equations and concepts necessary to figure out antenna lengths, types of rectifiers, types of circuit components, etc.

The linear nature of your Euclidean geometry both confounds and befuddles me.

I'm the same. Useless with anything that I need to know. :/

I have a terrible memory for names, but I can easily recreate room layouts and navigate through them blindfolded.

How good is my memory?
Well, considering I know various aspects of hundreds and hundreds of pieces of music, I'd have to say it's not bad.

In terms of other things, I'm not too bad at memorising names/faces/directions.

Passwords and music are repeated enough that they're in muscle memory.  Details are saved in books and my delicious and promptly forgotten to make way for concepts.

Brilliant at remembering the useless unimportant things like music lyrics, be it English or foreign, or even things about games I haven't played in years. However there are to many time when I go downstairs to get something and forget what it was once I'm there.

Good memory, filled with useful, semi useful, and useless knowledge. Contextual recall or if i'm asked a direct question answer pops up if i know it no matter when/where i learned it. The only major issue is time related personal events...no clue what year in many cases that they occurred. I know how old i was at the time, carefully counting back i can pinpoint the date...just annoying that i can have up to photographic recall of a lot of things...and quick dates elude me. Other dates easily recallable, just not my own.

Great game memory, hands remember, head remembers. Picked up SF4 pc recently, hadn't played anything in that series since SS2 Turbo on snes (when it was first released). Still had the timings for M.Bisons and blankas moves, still remembered all the combos. Though...can't tell you the date i played it the snes version (26~27...puts date at '91/'92)

they say memory is the first to go...can't remember what the second thing was...(old joke), i like that xiong posted that about passwords and muscle memory, very buzzed and drew a blank at what one of my passwords was...stared at the keys...then just let my hands do it, muscle memory recalled the pattern...figuring out how mem works, how it's stored, tagged, processed...pet project. :-[ (shuts up now)

I'm really bad at remembering peoples' names, movie titles, band names, and stuff like that.

On the other hand, I can easily remember the massively overly convoluted names of motherboards, CPUs, and video cards. I can even remember which rebranded Nvidia cards are the same.

I have an easier time remembering the names of cars if they are named with technical codes (like BMW, Audi, and Mercedes), rather than just words. But regardless, I can easily name 95% of all cars I see out on the road.

Otherwise, I'd say I'm average with everything else, I guess. I can't think of anything I am particularly good or bad at remembering, anyway.

I cram for every test.  Last minute studying seems to be all I need to make an A, so why bother making a big deal out of it, imo.

I'm guessing my memory serves me well.  ;)

I seem to pick and choose what I remember. If it interests me I will remember it. If I just don't care then I will forget it in anywhere between 30 seconds and 3 days.

Just today I walked down the hall to do something. Got halfway and turned back and sat in lounge. Mother got mad and asked why I wasn't vacuuming. In the 30 seconds it had taken from asking me, to moving into the hallway, I had forgotten what I was doing and decided to go back to watching my movie.

On the other hand if it relates to games I usually remember it for years later.

I am okay with names. I usually don't remember the whole name right away but usually just running names through my head that are close to what I think it is triggers it.

There are moments where my music is set to random and a song I haven't heard for 2 years comes on. Suddenly I can remember the weather, the time of day, and how I was feeling the last time I listened to that song. I've talked to a friend and she also has moments like this. Kinda spooky but pretty cool :).
I think I remember most of the first 151 pokemon from when I was a pokemon-tard back in middle school. Playing the games over and over probably helped :P. Even now as a uni graduate I can sometimes tell what pokemon a kid encountered when he's playing on his DS from the sound effect xD.
