My PS3 is full of fail...
« on: February 21, 2010, 01:51:38 AM »
I thought this deserved to be in tech since it deal's with the hardware side rather the games, well... I recieved a ps3 60GB model brand new, in box as a early bday/vday gift from a good friend o: well 3 days later, after I was on it a good two days in a row with a ps3 title, I popped in a PS2 game and i heard a scratching noise from the HDD, now lastnight when I popped in a bluray from blockbuster it shut off with "YLOD" Took it to a guy and he wanted me to pay $130, so instead I went out and got all the material's to do it myself. Lowe's has the WORST heating gun selection two 400c+ gun's for $25 and $59 then a DeWALT for $69 which was Multi, sadly forcing me to pay more.
So armed with Artic Silver 5 thermal compound, heating gun, and some isopropyl Alchohol & starbuck's I set to work on it about 30 minutes ago, right now reflow of the board is going great! and In 10 minutes its time to do the otherside. big Thanks to NaRu for linking me a video tutorial on youtube. Wait, you got a new PS3? A new 60 GB PS3??? What was that, like $500 before all the money you put in trying to fix it?

Either way, my 60 GB Gamestop refurb is running fabulously. I am thinking your was just bad luck. What retailer did you buy it from?

I have 2 ps3s fail in like a 3 year period both were 40gb ones though. On both the bluray drive went out on them the first time it was under warranty so i just sent it in but the one they sent me back burnt up about a year after i got it back so i just bought a slim.

A word of warring though i have heard that fixing a ylod is only temporary every person i have known to do it to there ps3 lasted a few weeks or a couple of months then died again. But of course i have only known 3 people who have fixed a ylod so i may be wrong.

Re-flowing the mobo isnt temporary, its just if you allow the system to get too hot again, it'll happen again as this is an issue with 1st batch models and such (im sure its 40gb/60gb) thats why i rather have this stuff here if it fails again, rather then cashing out to sony over and over :D

Ah ok that would explain it all of the people who i knew who had ylod multiple times they would often have 24hr gaming sessions lol.

Correction: Your particular PS3 is fail. The vast majority of them still work just fine.

Correction: Your particular PS3 is fail.

Considering her history with electronics, I'm not even sure if that's true.

Agreed.

Also, if you know your PS3 is going to overheat due to the fact you run it non-stop, go to the thread and look up how to keep your PS3 running well. Get a fricken laptop cooler or something to keep the system running at temps that aren't too high. Especially if you're one of those crazies that play non-stop for like 16 hours straight.

Even if you fix it, the equipment isn't absolute fail if you broke it.

What  do you think constitutes normal PS3 usage?

Not sure, but you can totally feel the heat after around 5-7 hours. (At 4 it's not too bad, but still a little warm).

Laptop coolers + not enclosed areas will probably help a lot.

And it's not just the PS3 that takes damage if it's too warm. Check the back, output cables are positioned closed to the vents. Sooner or later, those cables will take a little bit of damage. It's a 20 dollar preventative measure. Just like the 10 dollar fan they used to offer for the xbox360. It's the same concept as a pc. If you push that piece of machine for a long period of time, stock cooling just isn't going to cut it.

i just set up two mini fans over my ps3. I have had many 24hr gaming marathons and never had any ylods. I also keep my ps3 in a well ventilated area that with the two fans keeps my ps3 cool. Also slims seem to run cooler the fan comes on much less and it doesn't run as loud when the fans on. But since you have a fat ps3 i would try and keep it in a cool well ventilated area and either buy a laptop cooler or a little fan should do the job.

And those fans are a huge difference. I kid you not. Maybe only a few bucks, but the difference in temperature is huge after a certain period of time. The longest I've done so far is about 10-11 hours. My eyes just get too tired to continue, but I always check the temperature after, usually it's decently warm, but not horribly hot. (This was before I had the laptop cooler, so it shouldn't be too bad now that I have it)
