It lacks RAM, no access to GPU, and doesn't the cell processor also run slow, and only let you access one core? Sounds like a terrible computing experience to me.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but each cell has all of the above components built in. They are all merged into 1 chip.

Sorry but you are wrong fohfoh.
The Cell microprocessor is actually 8 physical cores with 1 disabled.
To my understanding, 1 is used for general calculations while 6 are specialized cores for something or rather.
Putting the Cell CPU, RAM and GPU on one chip would make the PS3's price go up even further due to the immense cooling required and not provide much of a performance gain over upgrading the CPU or GPU.
edit: from wikipedia
"The PlayStation 3 uses the Sony, Toshiba, IBM-designed Cell microprocessor as its CPU, which is made up of one 3.2 GHz PowerPC-based "Power Processing Element" (PPE) and eight Synergistic Processing Elements (SPEs). The eighth SPE is disabled to improve chip yields. Only six of the seven SPEs are accessible to developers as the seventh SPE is reserved by the console's operating system. Graphics processing is handled by the NVIDIA RSX 'Reality Synthesizer', which can output resolutions from 480i/576i SD up to 1080p HD. The PlayStation 3 has 256 MB of XDR DRAM main memory and 256 MB of GDDR3 video memory for the RSX."
The Nvidia RSX 'Reality Synthesizer' is another name for 7800GTX.

Wrong-o bud, quite the opposite effect actually. Basically you turn your PS3 into a home desktop computer, well it sort of already is but a better one. If you have an HDTV you can get a pretty nice high resolution desktop of 1920x1080. PS3's processor is extremely fast, a whole lot faster than your PC's. As for the GPU a new kernel for Linux was recently compiled that will allow you to use the PS3's GPU so that problem is solved. It allows it to play WMV, RM and Quicktime files, which otherwise are not detected by a PS3. What this in turn means is that you can now watch all your favorite movies and listen to your favorite music albums on your console without the need of PS3 media server. Don't get me wrong, its a good program but it can be a hassle to stream stuff sometimes.
There's much more but in essence... Its everything you could ever want it to be.
vuzedome:
What is this particular linux kernel?
I'm curious.

Even if the cell processor is faster than my Core i5 750, it doesn't matter since I've yet to see it hit 100% load. ..and I have my doubts that the cell processor can be faster than my i5. No matter how advanced it was, we're talking about a CPU that came out over three years ago.
A 7800GTX is weak sauce, but fine for just running an OS, but 256MB of RAM sounds just painful. Not to mention, how much software is there for PowerPC? It sounds like a fun nerd toy, but not something I would ever consider using on a regular basis.

CELL broadband processor was finalized in 2004, then was transferred to the PS3 in 2005-2006. >_>;;
