Gaming monitor/ t.v
« on: February 28, 2010, 04:17:09 AM »
So I want a t.v/monitor for my 360, future pc and watching downloaded blu ray and HD movies. The follwing aswell.

32"
1080P resolution

What would you reccomend and why?

I've had a sony and an samsung LCD so far both are good, but the samsung was just better in sense of contrast and colours.

Plasmas seem the best but, have the lowest life span when it comes to gaming and are more expensive and are aimed towards 40" plua t.vs

LCDs are my way to go at the moment

LED's are just beautiful, I can honestly say I have been sold to the hype and marketing about this, very hard for me to take my eyes off samsung LEDS.

32" for your desk is alright, but for your living room, you need a 46".

How far away are you going to be sitting? 32" is too small to use as a PC monitor if you're going to be sitting back away from it. I use my 60" TV as a PC monitor, and I have trouble seeing normal text. It would be impossible on a 32" screen running at 1080p.

In regards to the comment about plasmas... you REALLY have not done any research lately have you.

Most "problems" have been fixed in plasmas. It's just that LCDs have dropped significantly to be comparable at price point.

Samsung LCDs are great AFTER series 5. Pre series 5 are quite meh. Not bad, but are comparable to almost all other brands save for the stupid brands like Vizeo etc.

In all honesty, don't be dumb and buy a 1080p 60Hz if you want "future" HD. Look into the 120Hz ones.

I have a 32" 1080i TV in front of my bed for my TV/Monitor and a 46" 1080p TV for my second TV/Monitor (I use a 26" LCD and a 19" LCD for my desktop)

Also you are going find it hard to get a 1080p 32" TV. I know that Vizo makes them but most companies dont make 1080p TVs that small. I recommend you go for a 46"+

I feel that anything above 32 inches is way to big for me.

32 for desk use manily,it wont be far from my bed, i got a 42 inch downstairs.

Also that's what i thought initially but people are saying that 1920x1080 is a huge difference from 1280x720 no matter how large the screen is.

btw did you get the message i sent?

Also please elaborate on the difference between the different samsung series like whats the point? series 5, series 6 and series 7?

1080p as far as I know has 60Hz, 120Hz and 240Hz. So like I said. Go for the 120. It's probably the best performance vs price at this stage of the game. Yes, a 60Hz might be cheaper,  but if you want it to be your "future" pc one as well, you might want to invest the tiny bit extra to ensure extra usage.

Seriously 5 v 6 v 7. It's like ANY other series upgrade. It's just that IMO anything under series 5 has color contrast that doesn't sit well with me. As if there's excess whites or something. Might be something you can tweak... but... why? I first noticed it in Asia when I saw them side to side vs Aquos as well as compared to each other. Pre 5 (ie series 3 or 4) border lines the area where you normally don't notice it until you compare vs something like Vizio/Vizeo? where you just know the color is shitty as hell and you know you downgraded big time on purpose.

But in all seriousness, if you're going to do what you propose, you might find more pleasure in getting a nice screen and using a projector instead of a TV.

just keep in mind like ive said in many other tv/monitor posts, DO YOUR BEST to get it from a large department store like best buy if you can. Its worth the slightly overpaying to have the ability to take it back after you bring it home and say FUCK YOU ASSHOLES TAKE IT BACK I DONT LIKE THE COLORS THEY ARE OFF.

Or for 1 or 2 dead pixels, if you buy a tv or monitor and it has 1 or 2 dead pixels you cant return it as defective. You will in most cases be charged a 15-25% restocking fee because most places say until 13-18 dead pixels its not defective. So a few off colored splotches in your tv arent defective until there is enough.

In the event it is actually defective from the likes of a newegg, you are stuck footing the bill to ship it back. Which i guarantee you unless you ship a large amount of shit through UPS or Fedex you insurance of 500-1000 dollars is going to run you at least 8 or 10$ on top of a oversized box so expect a 50-60$ shipping bill back even if it was shipped to you for free

As others have said, it'll be difficult to find a 32" TV that does 1080p. If you're going to use it mostly as a computer monitor, you can get an actual computer monitors near that size.

If you are going to buy a screen for gaming, there's no point getting one over 60Hz, since there are no TV signals that support any higher than 50Hz, and using it with gaming means there will be a delay between your input and the screen's response due to it adding transitional frames to make your image 100+Hz.
If it's purely TV you're after, go for 200Hz.

I thought he wanted both. And with past experience, I really doubt he can tell the difference. So I said meet in the middle... go 120.

Plasma on the other hand is 600MHz... xD

I went to the big stores today and saw;led lcd and plasma lined up. by far LED had better colours more brighter. LCD had slightly better detail and it had better natural colours. the plasma was just dark.

So

1.LED /LCD
2.Plasma.

Thats from todays findings. I was kinda dissapointed with the comparison expecting plasma and led to be much better, but the LCD is still pretty damn good.

I felll in love the the t.v I want. Samsung series 6 LED 32 " twas a beauty.
There was a series 7 next to it, it had the everything the same apart from having extra dlna, internet and also when it comes to contrast it had the same amound of zeros but a 3 instead of a 2.

I won't really notice the difference.

your plasmas will have more accurate color reproduction brightness settings and such are going to vary some stores will fuck with that to make certain tvs look more appealing. For alot of people BRIGHTER = better
until you watch a movie where there is alot of stuff happening in a dark room/surroundings and the 6 different shades of grey and brown all look very very similar.
LED LCD = LED Back lighting if im not mistaken it helps a lil with colors and alot with black/white/gray

AFAIK a tv salesman once told me this.

"Where are you going to put your tv? If it's going to be in a bright place, LCD is better. If it's going to be in a dark place such as a basement, plasma is better. (Not to mention cheaper)"

But this was like 3 years ago.

Has anyone heard about how sometimes they adjust contract/brightness in older models to make them "seem similar" to newer models and either upsell certain attributes of sell an older model more frequently to increase profits? They sometimes do this against comparable brands... but generally brands will do this themselves normally as "default" settings to have more "difference" to other brands when compared to "push the sell". I think Aquos does this the most, but I'm not an expert in this topic. I think it was mentioned in the other TV threads.
