does funmation always queer up its dubs?
« on: March 02, 2010, 06:37:45 AM »
I was just wondering. Does Funmation always seem to completely rewrite their friggin dub script? Some of their newer dubs sound decent enough but i notice that the actual dialog is completely different from whats being actually said. A REALLY bad example is Negima! The dialog isn't even close. They add completely nonsensical lines that make no sense. I.e. i remember a part where theyre looking for a contact lens on the ground and they find it. Someone comments that its a good thing no one steped on it.. however in the dub that somehow changes over to  something along the lines of 'you'll need that to see at the stripclub tonight' or something o_O  I even remember them changing numbers for no reason, like the ghosts age. It made no sense. There were a lot of other really  bad examples that make characters come off different, and others that are just mind bogglingly dumb and nonsensical.

Normally i woulnd't even really care about the dub but my younger cousin enjoyed a couple of shows he saw me watching last time he was visiting and i was trying to find some stuff to let him watch to ease him into anime. He hates subs though so decent dubs would be helpful.

Im about to give Baccano a look and i hear its got a really good dub in it with accents that match the characters, but my concern is if they totally rewrite the script like they did with Negima.

So, is Negima an exception or are pretty much all Funmation dubs not even remotely close to the original script? Im particularly curious about Baccano! its really too bad too because the actual voice actors that i heard are way better than most dubs from back in the day

do you really need to make a post to hear half the people on the forum post yes or flame your for complaining and another small person strive to come up with 2 or 3 dubs that funimation managed not to fuck up.

And to actually make this post counted as more than a one word post, I'm typing this in as well.

yes i do need to make the post. I think renting every single funmation DVD and comparing them side by side is a bit much. im assuming some people out there have Baccano and other DVDs and can chime in on whether every dub is as totally screwed up as Negima! or not

I really dont get why they would completely rewrite it like that

the 2 initial posts lead me to belive they screwed up more than Negima. Remember im not refering to the quality of the voice actors, i mean the accuracy of the script. I wouldn't think they would just completely change everything on all their shows... would they?

I actually heard good things about the Baccano dub, though that was on the VA quality not the script quality so im not sure

FunImation. You can't comment on their dubs until you can at least spell their sodding name right :/

You might as well write in to Funimation and ask them about their scripts :)

To answer your question you would need to narrow down the members of the forum to:
a) those who watch dubs
and then
b) those who watch dubs and subs
and then
c) those who watched the dub and sub of the same show
and then
d) those who watched the dub and sub of the same show from Funimation
and then
e) those who watched the dub and sub of the same show from Funimation that recall these details
and then
f) those who watched the dub and sub of the same show from Funimation that recall these details and care
and then
g) those who watched the dub and sub of the same show from Funimation that recall these details and care and noticed this thread >_>

All joking aside, it's a dub. The fact that dubtitles are noticeable means that the dialogue changes are probably noticeable and are commonplace. It is probably related to fitting the mouth movements as well as localizing and dealing with any necessary censoring (especially if it's aired, which I think it was). I don't know what the changes are, because even though I have the dual audio version of Negima! I'm not going to bother to watch it. But age changes could be done, for example, to make it not lolicon or something. Also, certain archetypes and dialogue are just awkward and unnatural in English. There could be any number of reasons. But I mean, that's the risk you take with dubs. In general, few people would realize the difference until they watch the sub.
Although in my opinion, the more serious the show, the less leeway they have with it and it will generally be mostly the same. At least, that would be my guess, but I'm not going to watch a dub to check.

I'm ALWAYS nice. Well... except when I'm ebil. But I'm only ebil when I'm bored. Although... I'm bored all the time. Not that that's a problem is it? ;)

I don't really pay much attention to who does what, but Dragon Ball Z has a really good Eng dub.

You really don't want to start another dub vs. sub debate... they always end badly.

You should, however, go out and research what is actually involved in making dubs. The entire process is actually quite daunting and complicated. A few changes here and there from all the different translations, scripts, and mouth movements is definitely not the worst thing that could happen. And it does happen with pretty much ALL dubs.

Well said,
They did it to yu yu hakusho and they will do it to Inuyasha final act.

Would I turn down the chance to do dub acting....no

Wow, somehow I fit all of Nazo's a-g criteria. Of all the Funimation dubs I've heard or heard of, these are the categories they break down into.

1) Close to the original:
Gunslinger Girl
Rumbling Hearts
Samurai 7
Basilisk
Fruits Basket
Ouran High School Host Club
Fullmetal Alchemist (2003)
Full Metal Panic: TSR (technically an ADV dub)
Always my Santa (some of the writing leans towards category 2, but they left quite a few Japanese words in due to Mai's "items beginning with san-" powers.)

2) Somewhat different from the original:
Shuffle
Solty Rei
Trinity Blood
Kiddy Grade (borderline category 3)
Kodocha (The first disc was category 3, but the major changes stopped after that)
Suzuka
Tenchi Muyo OVA 3 (probably, though I didn't have the subs on to compare)

3) Vary widely from the original:
Negima (2005 Xebec version)
Desert Punk (faces always covered with masks = fewer mouth flaps = lots of freedom)
Burst Angel
YuYu Hakusho
Dragon Ball Z (especially with the old version)
Blue Gender
Tenchi Muyo GXP

As others have said, dubs for comedic and/or older shows tend to be liberal, while dubs for serious and/or newer shows tend to faithful. And imo, faithfulness to the original is not the be-all, end-all for dub quality. Not all Japanese screenwriting is stellar work, so if dubbers are able to make some improvements while still fitting mouth flaps, characterizations, and the overall story, more power to them. Like with Negima '05, I found that show a lot funnier in dub than when I watched it fansubbed, due to the dialogue changes. It was ADV's Ghost Stories dub that first taught me that "different from the Japanese" was not equivalent to "worse." Fair warning, that dub's more liberal/unfaithful than anything listed above.

Generally, the reviews at AnimeNewsNetwork will comment on how faithful or unfaithful the dub is on a given DVD.

Got any old fansubs on HDD/DVD/CD? Please take a look at this thread.

Pretty sure those weren't done by Funimation, but Animaze

(On a side note: I enjoyed the GiTS:SAC/2ndGiG dubs)
