does funmation always queer up its dubs?

naw, see thats my problem. I dont mind a little localization or changing ab it of the dialog to fit mouthflaps. Negima! completey changed the meaning off most of the scenes and the way characters reacted. Its like they just threw the script out and made people say whatever the hell they wanted to. They even changed nonsensical things like the age of the ghost o_O for no reason. im talking instead of 65 years old she was 60. No idea why.

You should, however, go out and research what is actually involved in making dubs. The entire process is actually quite daunting and complicated. A few changes here and there from all the different translations, scripts, and mouth movements is definitely not the worst thing that could happen. And it does happen with pretty much ALL dubs.

 Im not trying to do that at all. I know some people like dubs and some dont. (i know havoc HATES then no matter what, lol) Personally i almost always watch the sub. I just need to find some stuff with half decent dubs to try to ease my cousin into anime. The problem since ive been checking some dubs out is the complete script change Im not here to debate whether a dub sounds better or worse than a sub, im just curious if anyone is aware of whether funimation dubs are always as completely wrong as Negima! was

I know a dub takes a lot of work and i know a few changes here and there are necessary. Im not concerned about that. Im concerned about completely rewriting entire scenes to where the context is completely changed.

3) Vary widely from the original:
Negima (2005 Xebec version)
Desert Punk (faces always covered with masks = fewer mouth flaps = lots of freedom)
Burst Angel
YuYu Hakusho
Dragon Ball Z (especially with the old version)
Blue Gender
Tenchi Muyo GXP

As others have said, dubs for comedic and/or older shows tend to be liberal, while dubs for serious and/or newer shows tend to faithful. And imo, faithfulness to the original is not the be-all, end-all for dub quality. Not all Japanese screenwriting is stellar work, so if dubbers are able to make some improvements while still fitting mouth flaps, characterizations, and the overall story, more power to them. Like with Negima '05, I found that show a lot funnier in dub than when I watched it fansubbed, due to the dialogue changes. It was ADV's Ghost Stories dub that first taught me that "different from the Japanese" was not equivalent to "worse." Fair warning, that dub's more liberal/unfaithful than anything listed above.

Generally, the reviews at AnimeNewsNetwork will comment on how faithful or unfaithful the dub is on a given DVD.

ahh this is kinda what i was looking for, thnx so much zalis. Hmm thats an odd list. I was wondering if there was a time period cut off for them to quit just completely rewriting scripts.. but the release dates for that stuff is just completely mixed up. Im not noticing any pattern. newer and older stuff are all mixed up.

odd blue genders in there as very different. That was a pretty serious show. I guess theres no trend or way to know then is there? I was hoping maybe the newer stuff was going back to being more faithful to the originals.

outa curiosity what do you mean ghost story changes the series for the better? I dont know, i just cant agree with utterly changing a series for the hell of it. A dub translation IMO is to transfer the script as acuratly as possible from the original with most of the intent in tact. Just fudging with stuff to make it how you want it seems lame to me


I guess no one has actually given the Baccano dub a listen then? i got the dvds now i guess i'll check it out myself. Several people mention Yu Yu Hakusho is way off i guess. Thats good to know because i was thinking of showing that series to him. Its really too bad Hunter X Hunter screwd up gons voice so bad. The rest of the dub from me flipping back and forth is actually quite excelent. Both in accuracy and in VA quality. Especially hisoka, hes awesome. Gon is just so F'd up though that it makes it unwatchable. Its really strange too because its VIZ. I thought they were terrible. They did totally screw up the intro/ed though. For no reason they never changed them; they just used the first ones the entire series. It kinda pissed me off

i guess i'll check AnimeNewsNetwork.co m to see if they talk about Baccano or some other ones. Are there any other DVD review sites out there that are pretty good? Ive never check AnimeNewsNetwork before


*EDIT* glanced at animenewsnetworks site and searched for a baccano review. It was only moderatly helpful. they say: "The dub script also sticks surprisingly close to the original (by Funi standards)" .. which im not sure what thats suposed to mean. Im guessing thats under the assumption that funimation totally screws with scripts? Im not lovin that their scattered reviews. Anyone know a better DVD review site for anime?
