Cowboy Bebop
« on: March 11, 2010, 09:42:43 AM »
Just finished watching the series "Cowboy Bebop".

While I was little disappointed with the ending, at least we know that it *has* ended and there isn't likely to be another season of it.

It took me a little while to get into it, but eventually I got hooked on the music and the storyline that seems to weave it's way through the episodes.

In fact there seemed to be at least two stories that ran side by side through the series, now that I think of it.

Nice artwork in general and with the ships specifically.

Normally the hero's ship is *always* super shiny sparkly and never ever takes any sort of damage..... not here!

All of the ships that appear in the series on a regular basis, tend to looked a little 'used' all of the time. I like that in this series.

The character are fleshed out nicely as the series moves on, with new 'main' characters being added in the first few episodes and a little further into the series.

The 'rapid transit' system they use is very similar to the 'trade lanes' and 'gates' they use in the old game "Freelancer".

Yeh, love it :) The fact that everything's a bit rusty makes it appealing to me also. The action's nicely choreographed, the artwork's excellent, lotsa humour and witty dialog.

The ending is very fitting.

If you liked Bebop, be sure to check out Samurai Champloo and Black Lagoon as both of these are similar in some respects.

Funny you should mention those...

I actually watched Black Lagoon (both seasons) and Samurai Champloo (in that order) before I watched Cowboy Bebop.

I see that there a couple of Cowboy Bebop movies, are they actually worth watching or are they just a re-hash of the series?

The movie is definitely worth it, in my opinion. More of the stuff you seemed to like.

I personally didn't like Cowboy Bebop that much, maybe I should try watching with the Japanese track and not transcoded .rmvb files this time. For some reason it didn't appeal much to me much. Then again I was quite young back then (15-16 years old) so it could be different this time around (21 years).

Man I've watched the shit outta that series ^^

I'm an action buff though and CB certainly provides on that end. Also the scenario of interstellar bounty hunter is mighty appealing ;) Don't understand how any 15-16 y/o male could NOT like it xD

As for the movie, it's excellent and well worth watching. Imagine an extended CB episode in HD. The artwork and animation are awesome, plenty of action to keep you on the edge of your seat and all the stylishness that makes CB great.

One point I forgot to mention is the Soundtrack. Aside from Claymore, CB easily has the best soundtrack in my books :)

Bebop is one of my top shows.  It's just a solid, believable, well rounded show with a great dub to boot.  The ending does end which is great in a way, but it also left me wanting a lot more.  Much of the series was random encounters for the crew, I would love to have seen more.

Bebop is definitely one of my favourites. (perhaps my no 1 series).
Almost every episode is crafted brilliantly, with great story and animation. The characters are really well rounded and are so much fun through out the series. I liked it even more watching it the second time.
Last but not least, the music is absolutely awesome. It rates as the best soundtrack for a series in my books.

It definitely is a series where each episode is designed to be a satisfying experience rather than simply try to leave you in suspense and get you to watch the next episode, which is what we see way too often.

Yep its pure class.

Bebop is one of few attemps at roman noir in japanese animation, above all it's the only one to succesfully capture its essence.
There's no one in the world I'm interested in surpassing, excepted for myself.

The movie happens around episodes 23-24 of the series. If I remember correctly, it is in the movie that they explained why there are butterflies.

It's been a while since I've watched it yet I've always felt Bebop was a bit western, as in Hollywood-ish.  Hard to explain, it's such a unique show.

one movie and one copped up piece of crap that was the ending until they did it right, and is now counted as it's own entity.

I think it's difficult to talk about Cowboy Bebop. Easy to say something good, exact and precarious otherwise. Because you'd better have your shit in order if you're gonna criticize.

Common criticism:
Weak story line
Too self-loving ("The work which will become a new genre itself.")

In the first, they're missing the point. The second is grasping at shadows.

It's undeniable that Cowboy Bebop is one of the greatest works of anime. Nearly every aspect is seamless. Cliche free, plot hole free, budget-cut-animation free. (No harem, gratuitous fan service, gratuitous moe, whiny male lead, unbearably irrational characters, cheap or overwrought plot devices.)

The universe isn't so foreign, neither are the character types. But there's nothing quite like it, and certainly nothing similar that stands up to the shear force of quality, diversity, originality. In that sense, it's pretty damn sui generis.

So most talk falls in the white noise range: Like? Y/N. Because of gushing pukes like myself, enough people have taken to disliking Cowboy Bebop on obstinance rather than merit. Not that Cowboy Bebop is impregnable, but try to come up with a different anime (fuck, a different anything) that does it better. Cowboy Bebop isn't something you can dismiss with a finger wag, eye roll, upturned nose. By all means, it's not chiseled in the universe to like the anime, but an offhand comment isn't nearly enough. Fiction this great earns an exit fee.

I understand what you are saying.

The only other anime series that come near it are "Black Lagoon" and "Samurai Champloo", that is of the ones I can think of right now.

Of course, compared to probably quite a few other members of BakaBT, I haven't really watched a lot of anime, but I have tried to watch as many of the, shall we call them 'benchmark', anime as I can.

I'm still looking for the "LIST" of anime that are considered to be the shining pinnacle of their various genre's, but I reckon I've watched a few that have fallen into that category.

*note this post may change, I've just realised that I need to spend some time making a proper response to the previous post.

Probably not THE "LIST", but it's MINE ;)

Black Lagoon, Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo, Afro Smurai, The Boondocks, Avatar, Naruto, Bleach, Fullmetal Alchemist, Trigun, Berserk, Claymore, Canaan, Death Note, GANTZ, Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, Michiko To Hatchin, Hikaru No Go, Hanaukyo Maids, Golden Boy, Dogs: Bullets & Carnage, FLCL, Memories, Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children, Akira, Karas, Appleseed, Jin Roh,  Sword of the Stranger - Mukou Hadan

Mostly it's Action and Comedy :) I'm not really into Romance or Dramas...

Nice list. I did actually start watching Gurren Lagann, but I was watching it on a 'streaming' video site, before I found BakaBT.

Once I found BakaBT, it sort of got lost among the 'noise' as it were and I never did get around to d/ling it and now I don't think it is on Baka anymore  :(

Anyway, I think the main thing I like about Cowboy Bebop, is that each episode is a 'short story' that makes up part of the larger series wide story, Black Lagoon and Samurai Champloo both have that in common with CB, plus the fact and I admit I never realised it, that they don't have, to quote PithyGriff "harem, gratuitous fan service, gratuitous moe, whiny male lead, unbearably irrational characters, cheap or overwrought plot devices."

know what's surprisingly important to watch, Hell Girl.
I watched it and was impressed, but not as much as I was in the weeks following. I swear almost every anime I watched after that had Hell Girl references, and not just the obvious ones like Kampfer or lucky star either.
