infinityOS - The Media Distribution

darkphon22:
infinityOS 1.0 RC5 has been released to Sourceforge.

infinityOS will be frozen with this release to prepare for 1.0. I'm hoping to release infinityOS 1.0 Marvin on May 24 (which coincidentally is my birthday :P).

This release is mostly bug fixes, though a few games and utilities have been added. I decided to skip RC4 as there were a few bugs in the build that I had christened as RC4.

A list of changes is available here:
https://launchpad.net/infinityos/1.0/1.0rc5

Get it from:

Thanks,
Ryan

Is the MPlayer that comes with the OS patched with greg's latest libass patches and uau's ordered chapters patches? If not, then you should really do that.

After that there's still the problem of timeline being shown incorrectly in SMPlayer if an ordered chapters file begins with a segment link, though.

darkphon22:
Nah, I don't include the new git MPlayer build as I haven't had enough time to test it (or package it). The build of MPlayer made by rvm, the guy who makes SMPlayer, is currently used in infinityOS.

However, I'm looking at packaging and including the git MPlayer build in infinityOS 1.1. I'm testing it on my media center and so far I haven't had a problem. The git MPlayer build also supports multi-threading and takes up, on average, around half as much resources as the rvm MPlayer build. Needless to say, I'm impressed.

Until then you can follow the instructions below to build the git MPlayer build. I'll make a tutorial on my forums/FAQ later this week.
http://www.linuxtech.net/tips+tricks/How_To_Build_Uotis_git_MPlayer_Branch.html

Edit: The instructions I linked to have a dependency conflict. I have the workaround for this conflict that I will be including in my tutorial.

-----

I invited the developers of Xubuntu to collaborate with us to package and test Xfce 4.6.2 and Thunar 1.1. Our team wants to create a supported PPA containing up-to-date and tested packages of Xfce 4.6 and Xfce 4.7, which would be used by both infinityOS and Xubuntu.

We've also decided to add the git MPlayer build with the libass and ordered chapters to infinityOS 1.1.

--- Quote ---Moin,

The MPlayer Team has decided that due to long standing differences,
Uoti Urpala is no longer a member and developer of the MPlayer Project.

The MPlayer Team would like to ask Uoti, that the fork he has been
working on for quite some time, is labled as such with an clearly
distinguishable name.

Seems like the guy who makes the git branch of MPlayer has been kicked off the MPlayer Dev Team.

MPlayer development has stalled due to internal conflicts. There can be many comparisions made between the MPlayer and the XFree86 project before it was forked to create X.org.

As his branch includes features such as multithreading and is about twice as fast as the mainline SVN build of MPlayer, I would fully support it if he forked MPlayer and would include his fork in the next version of infinityOS. One could say that his branch is already a fork of MPlayer. ;)

My team will also look into making a PPA with automated builds of the git branch of MPlayer for all users of Ubuntu to use. The build of MPlayer currently included in Ubuntu is over a year old. As such, it is useless for our purposes. We would be more than happy to share the work we need to do anyways with the rest of the Ubuntu community.

Due an overwhelming combination of university and job related work, I have decided to put infinityOS on hiatus until the beginning of August. This includes package updates as well as core OS updates.

In the meantime, I recommend that interested users try out Linux Mint, an easier to use and cleaned up version of Ubuntu.

infinityOS will relaunch in August, based on the Ubuntu Lucid codebase.

Sincerely,
Ryan

Note: All versions of infinityOS released to date are fully compatible with Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic. Existing users of infinityOS will continue to receive security updates from the Ubuntu team and can use any package made for Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic.
