Anti-viruse program
« on: March 13, 2010, 07:14:03 PM »
My current anti-viruses program is Norton Works. Ive had it for about 6 years and I'm used to it. Unfortunately my subscription expired and since im going to have to pay $79.99 I thought it might be a good idea to get an upgrade instead. The problem with this is they stopped making works so now i have to pick a new program. At the store i found 2 different norton programs(Norton 360™ Version 4.0 Premier Edition and Norton™ Internet Security 2010) and a third that 2 of the sales floor guys recommended as something both they and the store use(ESET Smart Security 4). If you need to look it up ill put the links bellow. What I'm looking for is some personal feed back as to what others think about them. Perhaps someone else has actual hands on experience with them and could share it with me? Any and all advice is welcome. Thanks in advance.

avg imo, it's all i use (and all the computer shop i go to recommends\installs)
it's free and it does the job as well as any other antivirus

as a side note, most computer problems aren't so much virus's anymore as malware (ppl install programs without checking into them, or install free software without reading each page fully)

Paying for Anti-Virus is for suckers. Microsoft Security Essentials is free and works better than that crap from Symantec. It has very low resource usage, and it will never bother you for any reason (unless it detects something).

+1 although I personally use common sense as my antivirus.

That used to be my only anti-virus, but MSE is so simple and I don't notice that it's running, so I just let it run. I don't even notice it running on my shite Celeron laptop of slow-ness.

+1 for Norton Ghost.  I got ESET 2009 on my school laptop and I hate the UI and the way updates are done.  When looking at the features for the AV software, check to see the # of computers you can install the software on becuase Norton Ghost 4.0 says it includes protection for 3 computers.  Whatever version you buy should have features used looked at and more than recommendations from 2 sales floor people.  I've had ESET 2009 use up a lotta CPU at startup on my laptop as well.

I know I'm getting for at least 3 computers. As for the recommendations thats why i made this post because i want info from people beyond the 2 sales floor employees.

I use Antivir Free:  http://www.free-av.com/

It has consistently been rated highest in overall detections, of any free antivirus program and better then many paid ones. Been using it for years on multiple computers and never had a problem it couldn't fix.

viruse?  you mean "virus"?

i got another suggestion.   --->>

of those mentioned your best bet is eset.
i would also consider kaspersky.

although free avg detection rates aren't stellar and the program traces can be tricky
to completely un-install.

the rest are shit.

i recomend Avast.

its free,
very little false positives (saying its a virus when its not).
a very nice gui
firewalls
websheild (saved me a couple of times it checks the pages while you load so it stops the virus befor it activates.
quick updates

only about 10MB in ram usage while its not scaning (havent paid attention to when it scans as im asleep duringthis)

i had avg befor hand. it then failed Misurably. then along came avast. and ive been safe for 3 years! not a single infection. (all virus were stoped befor they activated)

Also an MSE user.  But should have another for manual scans (second opinion).  Many of them, though want one being the least intrusive.  Trying out a-squared Free,  It also scans for adware at the same time, so also a good backup for SpyBot S&D.  suggested from a Win 7 guide, but I'm willing to try some other alternatives.

When installing Spybot Search and Destroy, deselect all options for the least intrusiveness on your system.

AVG keeps adding more junk, IMO.

Lately Avast has revamped their user interface and whatnot. Looks really nice. Stays out of the way, too. I think I tried Antivir or something one time and HOLY CRAP THAT ANNOYED ME. Yes, I know I can get the paid version, thank you, now get the fuck off my screen. >_>

That's about when I accepted that Avast was probably the best free option, since it didn't annoy you with any ads or anything of the sort.

That being said, I don't think I've had a virus or anything in a very long time. I just use Windows Firewall for the firewall. Don't really need anything else, in my opinion.

If you do happen to want to invest money in something that's better, though, the Norton 2010 package is definitely a good option.

But, it's just not really necessary. Even crack and serial sites are actually pretty safe these days (at least from my experience). A whole paid security package is just unnecessary. Just put adblock on Firefox, and you shouldn't really have any problem. Some people suggest noscript as well, but I feel that it's overkill, and more a hindrance than a help.

So, I suggest going with one of the free options people have listed. I use avast, myself. Norton is good, but a bit overkill/unnecessary.

On a side note, is proving you have rudimentary spelling skills really that important? (to people complaining about that extra e)

Edit: I read a little about the 360. Apparently, it's like the Norton <insert year here> Internet Security packages of the past, just revamped a bit, in terms of UI and whatnot. Should be pretty good.

Using Firefox or Chrome with the NoScript addon + Avast! + common sense.

Oh hai, what's a virus?

Avast annoys me just as bad as Nod32. Dammit, I told you to scan everything, why tell me at the end certain files are unaccessible. (*tinker tinker tinker* fuck only full scan works properly with settings... gahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh hhh)
This is your home now. So take advantage of everything here, except me.

I like Norton 360 (hacked version), but the crack stopped working recently so I switched to AVG. Might try MSE, now that I know about it. Anyone have any benchmark comparisons between AVG and MSE?
