I thought SHAFT was always pretty popular, at least within my circle of friends.
SHAFT is popular right now because of Bakemonogatari, which inexplicably appealed to way more people than it "should" have.

Yeah, Bakemonogatari is one of the very, very few shows that actually deserve its popularity - but I didn't expect people to appreciate it that much.
The problem is people who only saw Bakemonogatari and Ef, and base their expectations of Shaft shows on that. Most of them will probably be dissapointed with new Shaft productions, while some may actually appreciate the studios strengths. Probably not much of them though, as most of the anime audience doesn't give a shit about direction, or visuals outside established norm. Even if current(well, not anymore) Shaft style will get popular, by that time Shinbo will be doing something else.

Anyway, back to Arakawa Under the Bridge - at first it seemed like it could be another Bakemonogatari, but that was quickly and thoroughly dismissed. Short "episodes", focus on comedy, doesn't take itself too seriously, isn't "cool", but still doesn't seem to be completely shallow. I liked it very much.
Some high points: music was very good, I usually don't pay that much attention to music in anime, but this time it really stood out. Great cast, I think my previous post showed my love for Maaya Sakamoto clearly enough, but Hirou Kamiya really surprised me - I like his voice, but this time it wasn't about his voice, it was about his acting. He definitely grew since voicing Itoshiki Nozomu, with whom Ko will undoubtedly be compared .

I was thinking Bakemonogatari and Sayonara Zetsubō Sensei  the whole time i was watching episode 1 and I didn't even know what Shaft was until I read this thread(turns out I am very keen on most of Shafts productions). I didn't find it over the top funny but I didn't think that is what they were aiming for.

That is because it was in all aspects "good", unlike Ef which looked like a University assignment of experimental animation techniques.

How do they think of this stuff?

SHAFT never fails to amaze me with their trippy OPs and EDs (which I highly approve of nonetheless).

"Hard work"...yeah. We saw what hard work they have put in an episode of BMG or VB...

* newy is back after watching episode 2.

EDIT: Every time when they use a zoom on one of his eyes I get the feeling they re-used it from BMG :/

Who are you guys going to for subs on this one?  I've noticed that I'm taking whoever gets it out first because it's the show I'm most excited about this season.    :o

for me it depends, group that does a decent work and group that l'm going to archive this from

to watch is probably wichever does fastest and acceptably good subs.

to archive l'll choose the DVD releases and BD if possible.

I'm watching Nutbladder purely because they got their batch of Hidamari Sketch accepted here so they can't be all bad. KSN and Formula could be good as well.

The only thing I don't like about Nutbladder is their western naming order. Formula are probably good as well, but I'll keep my distance from KSN if alternatives are present. I watched their Hakkuouki and wasn't that impressed by their work. The anime itself...well, check the respective thread here.

So, I just started watching episode 2.
59 seconds in, precisely. And what do I see?
OP is by Etsuko Yakushimaru. And I love her voice. Sotaisei Riron, which she is vocalist of is one of the best bands I discovered in recent months(by the way, go listen to some of their songs, you won't regret it)
Damn, this series is turning out to be awesome.
