The fights in VII are overall the easiest I've ever played (not having played the newest games). You didn't need enemy skills to get through. IX comes close in fight difficulty, but also had some interesting encounters. Difficulty can be increased in a remake however. I somewhat doubt they'll do that if they do a remake, though.

Though man, I was so happy the day Emerald Weapon missed with Aire Tam Storm, just as I was about to reset the game. I played that fight so many times. I now know that it 'only' does 1111 damage per materia equipped, but I didn't know that back then. ;p

It'd be nice if any remake or subsequent games would actually be hard. It's been a while since I've played a video game that was actually difficult on a base level. (Not just the 'dumb' system of making you weaker and your enemies stronger as you increase difficulty levels.)

Personally I think VIII had the easiest battles because all enemies were adjusted according to level. Over-level Squall (which inevitably happens to everyone), run him in critical health, Renzokuken will sail you straight through disc four. On the other hand you have IV, sudden party-wipes are a frustrating guarantee (dumbed that down seriously in the DS remake).

@forsaken: No implication intended. Secret of Mana, Secret of Evermore, Super Mario RPG, Earthbound keep me coming around.

I think everyone's thoughts bring us back to Jesta23's comment. No pleasing everyone. I'd argue no pleasing anyone. But nostalgia and fantasy are endless. And SquareEnix knows the profit. Worst thing they can do is give us what we think we want.

Hahaha, I remember how frustrated I was on the first boss-fight against Reno on the Sector-7 platform. He casts that weird triangular shield on a character which takes that character out of the fight until you attack your character once with a melee attack.

I don't think I even found out that trick the first time around. I just re-tried him so often until I managed to defeat him before all three of my chars where in the shield ^^;

Also, the first time you get to the world map you've gotta go to that little town and then head down to the Midgar Zolom on a Chocobo, get a short cutscene and then you're meant to walk into the cave that's there on the world map. I didn't spot the cave for like 4 hours. I tried literally everything you could on the world map, rode all over the place and leveled all my materia an entire level subsequently xD I even tried beating the Midgar Zolom because I figured, Sephy did it so maybe I should too? I got really fcking frustrated aswell and then I walked into the cave by accident :P

Ruby, Emerald, Ultima Weapon. The Wall Boss, several of the Jenova fights. I disagree about VII being the easiest. I didn't play it with a walkthrough to be fair. Maybe that's why you found it so easy? Maybe I just didn't spend enough time leveling up ^^ Who knows :)

So far XIII is by far the easiest I've played ^^; X had some tough boss encounters, but only a few... VIII was easy. IX & XII wasn't. And I disagree with VII but it was the first game of the sort that I played so maybe it's down to that...

What do you mean IX wasn't easy? I beat it without trying :/

Yes, I'll take a FFVII as long as I don't need to buy a PS3 for it.
