Swype [Android]

(1/1)

forsaken:
I'm on the look-out for a smartphone. I've been a fan of Android for some time now and so far the only thing holding me back has been the lack of a device that meets all my specifications AND has a decent keyboard. Touchscreen-keyboards haven't been able to convince me so far.

Now I've discovered Swype and it looks pretty fcking cool: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6spuyh3QPj8

Just wanted to share ;)

Also, if anybody knows of a good Android (2.1) Smartphone, I'd appreciate some recommendations, the keyboard is no longer a requirement ^^ I'm looking at Samsung's Galaxy S (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ce_oEzSosic), just announced and to be released in Summer 2010. Might just be what I'm looking for... :)

It looks cool, but I can see it taking some time getting used to. I would get fairly frustrated when it got the wrong words though. It's the main reason that I never really used the dictionary feature in older phones. It makes more errors than I do manually, and manually is pretty fast regardless. It also probably doesn't work very well with certain languages due to some common words being similar, let alone dialects, so I doubt it's something I would get right now.

What's wrong with manual touch screen input? ;p

I too avoided switching to dictionary, but that's mainly because the interface for adding new words was poor. Here it adds them automatically and switching between swype and type is easy if you're entering a custom word...

It'll definitely take some getting used to, but I'm gonna try and make the effort :)

Not sure what you mean with the language thing. I'm thinking that English and German will both be supported so I don't really understand the issue. What language are you thinking of specifically?

I can't say anything for certain of course, but certain words overlap. With the old mobile input, the dictionary would give several options for certain common words. Of course, you'd just have to cycle through them and eventually you'd get used to that if you used the dictionary. I personally find it annoying with certain words that come far down the list.

I'm suspecting Swipe does a huge deal of its "calculations" by reading the start and end letters, then placing the ones in between afterwards, so that might make it less of an issue with a full out keyboard.
