Experiment have seen collisions!!!!!!!!!!
« on: March 30, 2010, 01:23:57 PM »
CERN has apparently successfully fired up the LHC this morning without sucking us all through a black hole.

That's kinda cool :D  English is clearly their tweeter's 2nd language (or 3rd)

Hmm... Thought they already had stable beams of 3.5 TeV days (or weeks) ago and their next aim was 7 TeV.

I knew nothing of the outside world. I was just a frog in a well.

After years of trying. Earth is still here. So they shut it down to do some tweeking. Hopefully they'll get it right this time.

Well to attain the speed of light there should be no mass, hence why it's almost the speed of light

These things make me really paranoid... But as long as it doesn't blow us all to high hell, I guess it's cool. Hopefully we learn some useful stuff, especially considering how expensive the thing was to make in the first place.

Their main goal is to find the Higgs boson. That particle that grants every other particle its mass.
What's the problem with how much it costs? It's a collaboration of 26 nations.
And why paranoid? Let me guess you're one of those who believe that they'll create micro black holes which will devour the whole Earth and eventually the whole universe >_>

No worries about blowing stuff up, there's a quite
similar machine in the USA, just smaller, and they've
been at it for quite some time now. Fermilab.

Yeah, and the tevetron isn't as powerful either. The LHC is the fastest with the Tevetron in second place.

Making a black hole isn't really that big of a disaster. They just evaporate. People seem to think that a black hole is this massive hole in space-time when in reality can be a small hole in space-time. Its not like one could devour the whole planet if one was made. Thats just something doom sayers like to talk about. If you want to start talking about doom, talk about the US economy and the health care "reform".

Microscopic black holes can evaporate if hawking radiation theory is correct. It likely is, though. If for some reason he's wrong, the black hole will gravitate to the center of the planet, consuming mass, getting larger. Eventually killing us all after a couple years. Even the loli's.

However, I doubt he's wrong. It's the perfect solution the the black hole entropy information paradox.

If I was going to be worried about something, I'd likely be worried about the LHC creating stranglets.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stranglets

We'd quite literally die in the blink of an eye if one is created. But that's less likely than a black hole deciding not to evaporate.

what I worry about is humans existing long enough to colonize space thus continuing to survive even after the sun expands swallowing the earth.
But then I watch the local news and realize that it's not likely for mankind to survive even the next few thousand years. It puts me at ease.

When life gives you lemons, you clone those lemons and make super lemons.

I don't suppose there's already a disaster movie about it?

Not yet, but if you want to pen a screenplay, at least it would be an original disaster...

It might be because i skipped to much class, but i think i remmeber having my teacher doing some math that earth isn't big enough, aswell as human mankind isnt inteligent yet to create a black hole that would devour us all.

Ah well, i would like getting spagettio'ed.

You're teacher is incorrect. All it takes, is for an object to become dense enough that the gravity itself can capture light. Those objects can be as large as our solar system (super massive black holes found in the center of galaxies) or microscopic black holes on the planck (quantum) scale.

"To make a black hole, one must concentrate mass or energy sufficiently that the escape velocity from the region in which it is concentrated exceeds the speed of light. This condition gives the Schwarzschild radius, R = 2GM / c2"
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Micro_black_hole#Minimum_mass_of_a_black_hole

Basically, collide 2 particles at high enough energy, you get a black hole. Though, in theory, you need hundreds of TeV of energy to accomplish this and the LHC (At peak) will eventually be dealing with 14 TeV of energy (though I've read reports, it can go up to a maximum of 17 TeV?)

Even if you have a black hole it would evaporate. The worst disaster that can happen is, if there would be a quark particle that would eventualy devour us.

Yeah, that's why there is nothing to fear. Hawking radiation solves the black hole information paradox and Relic's law of awesomeness* prevents a stranglet from devouring us.
