I also don't like subs that are too BIG. It makes it really hard to read and gets in the way (example).

That is a pretty good size, the problem is that they had too much text at once, making it go to 3 rows. When watching at a near distance it still works, when watching at a far distance it is nice.

As long as its readable an not yellow and black I am fine with it.

Gloss. Bolded. Subs. End of story.

Seeing rushed n rusty subs is instant fail. Color coordinated subs is a bonus.

I prefer it simple, easy to read and easy on the eyes, so I use:

Font: Calibri, bold, warmwhite (#fff7ef)
Border width: 2, black (#000000), 100%
Shadow width: 1, black (#000000), 50%

I wrote a guide on the subject and live by it.

So basically what I want in a release is 1) white/non-disturbing fill 2) notably darker border 3) sans-serif/slab-serif font 4) big enough font size 5) enough vertical and horizontal margin. Oh and 6) no Arial, Comic Sans or any sort of "decorative" fonts. Most fansubbers fail at 5), badly.

Font: Comic Sans [30p, bold, bright pink with yellow borders]
Margin: Vertical 5, horizontal 5

If they are willing to go the extra mile, the pink may be exchanged for a colour that matches the current speaker. Furthermore, in order to ensure that no ambiguity arises, it'd be nice if fansubbers would italicize all dialogue spoken by any character other than whoever is in view.
