I'd say half the brain was removed from each body and transplanted into the other.

Now I really want to know what happens if that's pulled off successfully, would the two previously different people now be the same?

Well you can just sever the corpus collosum that connects the 2 halves and then it pretty much is 2 separate brains since they can't speak to each other. Also the two sides perform different tasks.
