That was just a small clip from the story. Eventually the boy starts to brush his theet, and visit the dentis, and the caries end up flushed out in one fatal brushing.
It's from an old childrensbook from the 50thies.

To answer your question, yeah it is, but I think they have more sympathy with the caries that get flushed out in the final scene. The world is cruel.
