Define "multi desktops"

Consider ultramon for desktop and taskbar extension.

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/Downloads/powertoys/Xppowertoys.mspx

Virtual Desktop Manager on that page. Basic, but gets the job done.

I've used what MS makes for that problem, but I think AltDesk, which is for windows XP, does a better job.

Ultimately changing your OS works too.

That's cool. Almost makes me wish I needed it.

The linear nature of your Euclidean geometry both confounds and befuddles me.

Lol, yeah, for some reason people tend to use the cube in Compiz as "proof" that Linux is bad ass. Its not very useful and I found it lose its appeal as eye candy very quickly. There are so many other useful things I don't understand why people care about a Spinny Cube of Not-so Awesome.

I agree it's not as good as it looks like but it's useable.

I used it a lot. Mainly to divide attention when doing multi tasking. For instance, one side is random surfing, one side is hw, one side is a movie (generally in the middle) and I rarely use a 4th. It's a useful tool to layer your "alt-tabbing" but that's about it.

I use multiple desktops as well, however the cube itself is not useful. I have my set up so if I move the cursor to one side of the screen and right click it goes to the next side of the cube. I'm just saying that having a rotating cube isn't useful, I use it constantly. I rarely have fewer than 2 desktops in use.

I disabled that aspect and put a hotkey so that "super + left/right" would spin the cube. Having the cube spin when your cursor hit the side was damn annoying. Like I said, I only use it to stack alt tabbing or to organize clutter. It's useful to have a single word doc on one desktop and websites open on another when you're doing research. Easy to fly over to the page to do the writing instead of alt-tabbing through a stack of crap to find the word doc underneath. That's about the only "good" use for it, but I like that option. I can also have the webpage stay on top of the "stack" instead of changing the order of webpages and searching through the stack to find it again. (I really am not a huge fan of tabs in browsers)

??? I had to enable that. Plus I have it so I have to right click. I can't remember a single time where I would try to right click the extreme left or right of my screen.

In any case, I very much wish Microsoft would implement this feature natively. I can't imagine its hard in comparison to the rest of what they do.

What feature? Extended desktop or desktop cube?

Well, the cube is just a specific GUI to access extended desktops. If I were to suggest what they should do, I would suggest adding the desktop cube, not just multiple desktops. I think many of the conveniences found in Macs are drawing people away from Windows, as well as the eye candy. As mentioned, I find it difficult to believe that a group like Compiz can put something like that together, but Microsoft can't.

Compiz was a sort of long development period. Look up Beryl. Also, it's not that Microsoft can't but that they feel it's not needed.

I know that its not that they can't. I also believe one of Beryl had the cube since 2004. Multiple desktops have been around for a long time, and MS has even made software that allows for them, as mentioned earlier.

Why MS doesn't think multiple desktops would be useful is beyond me. I can understand not thinking the cube is useful, I agree with that after all, but thats just the GUI for MDs. I also have noticed that many collage students are switching over to Mac. I don't think its absurd to say that if MS loses to Mac now, they will have somewhat of a not so easy time later.

Same reason powertoys are not shipped with the OS/updates.

Not to mention possible security issues that might be created if implemented.

One of the power toys was a scientific calculator with a graphing function. In that case, it makes perfect sense to not include. They would have had to spend money to put it through their normal QC'ing. Who would pay money for that? Those of us who would want such a thing would probably get another, better program unlike with WMP.

The cube shouldn't present any more security risks than any other program, and it would help sell the product. This is a feature most people could use. There are two features, that if implemented, I would switch back to Windows. One is multiple desktops. The other is what is called Exposee in OS X (scaling in Compiz, which I feel is a lousy, misleading name). These two things make managing windows much easier.

I'm sure at some point Microsoft thinks that since they have the mammoth's share of the personal OS market, they don't have to change too much, but from what I'm seeing, they are losing the next generation of computer users. If you look around campus here, you will see that about 20% of the students use Macs. I'm not studying art, but rather mathematics. I spent a lot of time on campus when I was in highschool and middle school since my mother works there and can say that this is a significant increase. I acknoledge that my sample population is both specific and small, but you (fohfoh) who have stock in Apple should know that their business is picking up, as you have said in other posts.
