. . . But regarding OSTs, the lighter, dittier themes usually stand out the most and I think that lent to Clannad significantly. The piano melodies are absolutely fantastic.

I believe it's all about having catchy parts in the song that are easily remembered, such as the last couple of seconds to Clannad: After Story's OP. When an entire song all comes together in one melodic sweep, that's what makes me remember it. It also makes for grand emotional scenes during the show itself. Key usually has great OST's, but Clannad's was just out of this world.

Also, I agree, the piano melodies are unbelievably well done. I love piano, so it's obvious that I was very happy with the amount of quality piano.

And despite how lovely the melodies are, they're ever so simple! I adore the piano and thus self-taught myself to play it.
I immediately, without hesitation, tried to learn the Clannad melodies on Piano and did so easier than I expected.

I would, but my piano is terribly out of tune, and in the living room. I would rather play it in my own room, so if there are other people in the house, I don't bother them. I'm thinking about getting an electric keyboard, and after listening to Clannad's OST, I almost have to have one.

I don't have a piano. I have an electric piano. But the 'Piano Noise' barely sounds like a piano. I guess it'll have to do for now.
I might buy a better one this summer, though.

Spice and Wolf is such an awesome series. Though, I can't really recall the soundtrack, I can always recall the tune that played during the credits of Season 1. "Seven apples on the witch's tree...", right?
Fate Stay/Night was pretty darn good, too.
Funnily enough, I just downloaded Fairy Tail, and hope to watch it by the end of the Easter Holidays. I'm lookin' forward indeed.
my favorite song from that series ;] unforgettable to listen to it all day :D

I remember downloading the OST just for that one song. I remember just putting it on repeat over and over. Silly, but it's just so cute!
Kinda' like the first time I finished Portal and heard Still Alive. No, exactly the same.

Not suggesting anything. But, for the sake of a reply, it probably fits her.

I despise saying 'lol', so it's kinda' difficult to say something else. So, meh!

Whether or not I should have, I've never heard of The Vision of Escaflowne.
High fantasy adventure or something, yeah?

Which reminds me, I always hoped for more Epic Adventure anime shows. One long 'quest' to be told over the course of the story. I suppose of the ilk of Seirei no Moribito. I had hoped to find it in shows such as Gina Densetsu Weed but have yet to find another series long anime with only one focus.
It's from 1996, so it's not exactly one of the "hip" new anime (although it still ranks as one of my top favourites). The show might not be to everyone's taste, it's fantasy adventure with mecha and a heavy touch of romance, in a rather shoujo style. It wasn't as groundbreaking as, say, Neon Genesis Evangelion (which is also from that approximate time-frame) in terms of themes and style, but it has an excellent storyline, no fillers, quite good animation for its time--I like its animation better than the animation in some more recent anime--and, most importantly for this thread, a soundtrack composed by Yoko Kanno (who also did, for example, Ghost in the Shell and Cowboy Bebop's soundtracks). The soundtrack is quite different from more recent anime, as it's mostly orchestral--not just, say, some string instruments and a piano--with several pieces of Gregorian chant, including both male and female choruses. Also, the opening theme was sung by the main character's seiyuu, who was sixteen at the time.

Oh, and I just noticed you asked for the top three soundtracks, but I'm only going to give my favourite--I have far too many tied for second place just behind this one, and I'm both indecisive and afraid I'll leave something out. ;)

Well, that was indeed a very 'elaborate' description. Thank you. Whilst I'm more than partial to Romance, Mecha has never appealed to me. Though, when I think 'mecha', I immediately think Gundam and Transformers. But I understand it is not like that. Still, I might indeed check it out. And with an orchestrated soundtrack, complete with a choir as you say, I might indeed check it out.
Plus, no fillers is win-win, right? I don't mind fillers in some Anime. Indeed, Seirei spent a huge portion mid-season with fillers, but it worked. It helped build the characters. Rarely do fillers actually work. But of course, having no fillers is even better, right?

Thanks.

It's a choice between Welcome to the N.H.K., Naruto Shippuuden or Code Geass R1.

I found Welcome to the N.H.K.'s OST to totally fit the theme of the anime. It's one of those OSTs I could just listen to for an insanely long time.
Favourite Track: Youkoso! Hitori Bocchi -> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I8kB7gNcNJU

Naruto Shippuuden's OST(s) all tie into the ninja-verse really nicely. You have songs that are based on feelings that, as long as you have true friends by your side, you can conquer anything. It has songs of tension, ultimate sorrow and even darkness in the form of Akatsuki's associated themes.
Favourite Track: Mountain Haze (it's from the Naruto Shippuuden OST 2) -> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QhL8pg4xh5o
[I wanted to say Akatsuki was my favourite track, but it doesn't move me like Mountain Haze does.]

Last but by no means least, Code Geass R1's OST is great. Since the anime drifts between tense action, regality (if that's even a word) and dark pasts, the music equally does so. I like how, for example, the "Nightmare" (I guess... that's either a typo or a play on the Knightmare frames) theme feels like a dance, which is almost what a fight is. Sure not a modern-day bar scuffle, but back in the day... 1 on 1 combat was much more majestic.
Favourite Track: Elegant Force -> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DzUwnDO_8NM
[Chosen because it starts off like a conflict but then the swift turn into desperation.]

I agree with Havoc on:

Clannad OST's and Kimi ni Todoke.

I also really like the soundtrack for the Aria trilogy.

Death Note
Eureka 7
TTGL
Ga-Rei Zero
Kimi ni Todoke

I actually really like the Ergo Proxy OST, most of it is pretty chill music, easy to sleep to or listen to as back ground noise.

the Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei OSTs were pretty good too.

this is just if im naming full OSTs, there are a ton of good single songs out there tho.

Imo, most of the OST's from KEY's works (visual novels/ anime) is awesome.

I really like the ost of Kara no Kyoukai and Haibane Renmei.
+ the songs of K-ON!  ;D(although I never seen the anime, I do know the whole soundtrack... :-\)

Cowboy Bebop (Of course!)
BECK (great variety of sounds)
Darker than Black
Berserk (anything with Susumu Hirasawa is amazing)
Princess Mononoke (Joe Hisaishi's work is so emotionally gripping)
FLCL (Of course)

There are many, many more but these are the ones that stand out at the moment.

Wow, I had forgotten about that song. I remember watching that show at a time in my life where I felt very lonely- it was my first year of college-and I really identified with alot of emotions in the show. The feel of this song really encapsulates what I was going through and the emotions I had at the time.

I think for example of Mushishi, Hikaru no Go, Kenshin OVA1 as good examples.
Have to agree with Rurouni Kenshin: Tsuiokuhen (at least, that what I think you meant...). It was on regular rotation in my CD player for a while, haha.

Also, Cowboy Bebop OST #1 and #3, BECK, and Bubblegum Crisis: Tokyo 2040 AS SEKIRIA.
