Favourite Anime OST
« on: April 15, 2010, 04:38:24 PM »
Well, simply put, as the title reads, I'm lookin' to see which your favourite Anime OST's are.
Let's make it you favourite 3, eh? No too harsh, not to 'un-leaniant', if such a word can be used.
Here are mine:

1.) Mononoke Hime
2.) Clannad
3.) Seirei No Moribito

Come to think of it, even 3 ain't enough, but "oh well", yeah?
Which are your fave 3?

Yeah, I suppose you're right!
I honestly can't think of one OST that has struck me as rather 'uninspired', y'know?
But there are countless ones to name, without nary a doubt about it!

To be a really good anime OST I think it has to deepen your anime experience, giving it another dimension. Some OSTs are really good to just listen to, but doesn't give that extra dimension in the anime.

I think for example of Mushishi, Hikaru no Go, Kenshin OVA1 as good examples.

Well, yeah. Of course. Without a decent OST, it doesn't enrich the experience.
One thing that strikes me with Anime, are the emotions in a series. A decent OST really does help bring out and elevate emotions. Make me cry like a little girl. Except for Lost, Anime is the only form of entertainment that can do that for me.

Though, that said, it also depends on what your watching. Cowboy Bepop for example is bluesy, right? It doesn't need a sensational, sweeping and orchestrated Soundtrack. It just wouldn't fit the theme. Though, I've never watched Cowboy Bepop, despite it's acclaim, it just never struck me as my kinda' thing. Bepop is more action and futuristicy. Something more oriental like Mononoke and Seirei has this kinda' thing. It fits. Clannad, Myself;Yourself and such, despite being a rather humourous, slice of life Anime, has a very moving and emotional core, which is brought out by its light musical score.

But yeah, a decent OST is crucial. Completely agree.

Whoa. Whoa. Whoa. Please mind that I wasn't insulting its soundtrack. I haven't actually watched it for a start.
I was just using it to refer to the fact that the soundtrack must suit each series' setting for it to work. And Cowboy's did, right?

I actually didn't see you mentioned Bebop, lol. I just posted the first thing that came to my mind...

Uhmm I actually think the jazzy blues fits very nicely. The setting is on the future but it ain't flashy and sparkly. It is more towards the worn out side of things

For my overall favourite, I think I have to go with The Vision of Escaflowne's soundtrack. It managed to not just set the scenes well, but to impart a greater sense of the "epic" nature. There's many other soundtracks I dearly like, but Escaflowne's comes out on top.

What I meant to say was not that you need a decent soundtrack to enhance the anime experience (which is true btw), but rather that there are a lot of good standalone soundtracks that can be misused, misplaced, overused etc, and thus doesn't qualify as good anime soundtracks in my eyes. Take Ged Senki for example, wonderful score, and great to listen to, but terribly malplaced in the anime. I also like Saiunkoku Monogatari soundtrack, but I never even noticed it in the anime itself.

To mention more famous animes I could mention practically all BeeTrain animes where it is terribly overused despite being having great tunes, and the praised Kara no Kyoukai which I honestly find terribly overrated. What is misused, misplaced, overused etc is personal though, just like taste in general.

Whether or not I should have, I've never heard of The Vision of Escaflowne.
High fantasy adventure or something, yeah?

Which reminds me, I always hoped for more Epic Adventure anime shows. One long 'quest' to be told over the course of the story. I suppose of the ilk of Seirei no Moribito. I had hoped to find it in shows such as Gina Densetsu Weed but have yet to find another series long anime with only one focus.

Now I understand. My bad. But, whereas I haven't seen many of BeeTrain's Anime's I have watched .Hack//Sign. Personally, I found the soundtrack to that absolutely splendid! It complimented the series brilliantly! Quite hollow and detached often, but complimented the mood and themes of the Anime. Unless I'm talking absolute rubbish, of course.

Mai-Hime ( Yuki Kajiura - Mezame )
Tenjou Tenge ( (idk artist..) - Bomb A Head [OP] )

Damn there would be so much more worth mentioning but.. :E

Clannad's soundtrack was absolutely astonishing. Certainly helped during my 12-hour marathon of Clannad: After Story, too! Even after watching it all in one go, the music was still not old. However, I didn't care much for the ED of Clannad: After Story as much as the others.

K-On! has some great songs on their many(and I mean MANY) soundtrack CD's, as I used to have the K-On! Music Collection on my hard drive. Lots of good stuff, and some other stuff, not so good. I loved Boom Boom Boom, Don't Say Lazy(full version), Watashi koi no Hotch-kiss, and plenty of others. Really satisfying.

Toradora had a nice sountrack, but other than OP 2(Silky Love or something like that) there wasn't anything too special.

I've never really enjoyed many OSTs from shonen anime, but Bleach deserves an honorable mention, even though I don't particularly care for the show. There's plenty more I like, but I just tossed the first ones that came to mind, there are too many good soundtracks out there to list them all.

Amen to Clannad. It's an amazing feeling when the soundtrack stands out above all else.
Perfect to get the tears of joy or sadness rollin', right?
Bishojo Anime usually seems to have the most 'remorable' OST, as silly as it is. All the grand and sweeping OSTs, despite being breathtaking at the time, to me, are forgotten after a while. Which is a shame, really.
It was because of Clannad I went after Air, hoping for the same sensual treatment. But was left rather disappointed. Vastly, actually.
But regarding OSTs, the lighter, dittier themes usually stand out the most and I think that lent to Clannad significantly. The piano melodies are absolutely fantastic.

Havoc10K

Spice and Wolf is such an awesome series. Though, I can't really recall the soundtrack, I can always recall the tune that played during the credits of Season 1. "Seven apples on the witch's tree...", right?
Fate Stay/Night was pretty darn good, too.
Funnily enough, I just downloaded Fairy Tail, and hope to watch it by the end of the Easter Holidays. I'm lookin' forward indeed.
