Plasma or LED for gaming?
« on: April 19, 2010, 09:01:55 PM »
Okay, finally saved some money and now I'm planning to get a ps3 and a nice hdtv, either a plasma or and led.

The thing is, I can't figure out which is better for gaming. From my research on the internet, plasma seems to have better colours, but the sales rep from bestbuy and futureshop told me there is still the issue of burn-ins. On the other hand, led has nice colours too. But the things is, I don't know if I would need to go to something that has a 240hz refresh rate. They are way more expensive, but the sales rep insits it is 'advised' to go for that.

So guys and gals, I'm hoping to hear feedback about your gaming experience with your plasma or led tvs.

you wont notice much difference between the 2 just get the tv that you think looks the nicest  nearly any half decent lcd tv functions just fine for console gaming since they cap the FPS on them pretty low

As long as it is bigger than 42inches, go for it.

FYI, LED isn't a type of TV. It's a type of lighting for LCD TVs.

Laser ones are freaking expensive. I just wish I can afford one  :'(

Ya I know. But I don't plan on getting a regular lcd; hence, I refer to it simply as led

If I'm not mistaken, plasma TVs also have the disadvantage of being significantly heavier than their LCD counterparts and can get very hot. When added to the burn-in issue, I'm really not sure why plasma TVs are still on the market.

Because almost all tv's now have pixel shift so burn-in is a thing of the past every so often every pixel shifts. But they still are heavier. they are on the market because of the cost they are cheaper then lcd still.

Plasma TVs tend to out-perform the rest of the market in darker settings, main reason they still are up on the market. Also burn-ins aren't nearly as big as a problem in newer Plasma TVs as they are in the old ones. I will say there biggest disadvantage has to be the weight, since they can weigh twice as much as the LCD counterparts depending on the size.

Now if you are setting up to play games in a brighter room I would say go LCD, they tend to have a better picture in brighter areas. Getting the TV isn't always about what is the best of the selection it also is about the setting you plan to put it in. So with all that if you plan on going in a dark room, I heard the LED back-lit are being the first that has challenged Plasma in the dark room settings, LED side-lit still is somewhat the same setting as a normal LCD.

Concur. Burn-in is really a thing of the past. However, the plasmas are indeed far hotter and less energy efficient. But many still claim better image quality on a plasma.

What panels do LCD TVs typically use? TN panels? Not that it'd make much difference in this instance, just trying to see if today's LCD displays are roughly equivalent to LCD TVs.

I see where you might be going with the TN panels, iindigo, but remember that for gaming purposes a higher response time is of the issue, not the extra colour quality.

it depends on your budget. If you have enough money for a high end Plasma ($3000 or more) then Plasma would be better but if you want to spend like $1500 LCD LED TV would be better. A cheap plasma isn't good at all

Most decent or better TVs (as in LG, Sony, Samsung, Panasonic, Hitachi) use IPS or S-PVA panels.  Viewing angles and black levels are much more important for TVs than for computer monitors.

my 2 cents:

Plasmas have a greater image quality overall (refresh rate and color gamma) they are cheaper (way cheaper) to buy than LCD's but if they break, you might as well buy a new one (really expensive to fix)

LCD's are energy efficient, they have a nice picture quality. . .newest TV's (which are xpensive) go with 240 hz (plasmas claim to have 600. . .not true tho but still faster response than LCD's)

If you have a small room plasma's work great on winter since they work as a TV/Heater combo.
LED's . . .well I wont talk bad about them but at least the samsung ones. . .they look pretty good, id recommend them for gaming (since its virtual imaging) but for watching movies/pictures/HD Id totally go with the Sony LED . . .it looks AMAZING compared to the samsung (in dark scenes) although its not as slim

Samsung looks more vivid, a lot more colorfull but once you get to a really dark scene, or say dark details (say for example texture on a businessman's suit) you wont see more than pitch black, while sony retains all the details. . .its like using shadow/highlight (from photoshop) on every scene. . .

So yeah. . .things that are MUST

LCD: 120 Hz at least and 1080p
Plasma: 1080p only

just to get it out there, the LED tvs that are out for the most part are simply LED backlit tvs which give a better basis for color.

Unless your talking about that nice like 11" sony OLED screen which shits on the other tvs in clarity and color and like 10 other things

For 2500 CAD we were looking at one of the newer Samsung series.. The eco whatever LED series. (Current year model). Yes, it does look nice, but for the price, we went with something else. (Which I might add, looks just as nice after tweaking with the settings.)
