Need some help on GPS
« on: April 21, 2010, 03:59:23 PM »
I need some help on GPS. First time purchasing one. I don't want to purchase a bad one (don't think they are all bad). I'd like something cheap and efficient. I've been looking for few days to get me one.

Garmin Nuvi.

This is the one I use (Nuvi 255w): http://www.in.com/videos/watchvideo-garmin-nuvi-255w-gps-6966931.html

Very fast, very accurate, easy to use, long battery life, USB connection for power so your AC / Car adapter will be cheap -

I've been nothing but happy with it.

Better than Magellan.  I hear they're slightly better than Tomtom - both Garmin / Tomtom have little things that one-up eachother, but in my eyes, Nuvi won the fight.

Bout $120-150 depending @ where you buy ($140 @ Bestbuy )
Nothing.

Kudos on Garmin and TomTom.

Magellan sucks. We tried it before and it really leads to random shitholes or dead ends. Not to mention it's annoying as shit.

Magellan sucks in the low-range, you get the higher range products they seem to be a bit better. TomToms and Garmins are the major fight for the economical market with the better low-end GPSs. Also as Kyanwan said TomTom and Garmin both have small quirks that one up each other so they end up staying on a equal playing field.

I would say due to it the Garmin Kyanwan posted would be one of your best bets, but if you want to look a bit more just compare between Garmin and TomTom in that range.

it comes down to personal preference for the most part in tomtom vs garmin. I cant stand garmin because personally when i use it in Philadelphia it blows donkeys at telling me when i should actually be turning.

Like i said its more or less in the city where there is streets clusterfucked together and exits for roads are terribly marked since its pennsyltucky. I have tried older garmin nuvi 350 with updated maps, and newer garmin nuvi something like 300 or something.

And hate both of them compared to my tomtom one xl im using that is like 2 or 3 years old now.

The newer gpses do have a few features i like over my current gps but its nothing worth me goin out to buy a new one(stuff like saying road names)

Yeah we don't have that problem up here with Garmin.

What are you going to use it for?

It seems everyone assumed you are using for car navigation, but that's not the only use for a GPS.

I have a Garmin Nuvi and a TomTom One,  the garmin grabs the signal faster but leads me to the wrong places more then the tomtom, Honestly...garmin's menus are easyier to navigate and better when searching for stores. I searched gamestop on both TomTom: Nothing found.  TomTom home? Its decent... not big enough to change my mind though.

Like I said... try updating firmware and trying again. GPS were so screwed up lately in my city due to construction. It needs those fixes.

Using it for traveling. I need it to do something. Also, my brother and friends want to do some traveling. I'd like to have one anyways before I leave to Japan ...... I wonder if they'll work in Japan?!

Thanks for the tips people.

We have a NAVSSI and a Furuno GP-80.

The NAVSSI's dual GPS antenna configuration is kind of nice, and its connection to the inertial navigators (gyros) could be handy in case GPS goes down.

the GP-80 is kind of lame, no graphics, just lat/long, bearing and speed  :-\

The linear nature of your Euclidean geometry both confounds and befuddles me.

Yeah it will work in Japan if you purchase the maps for it. but any english GPS will only come preloaded with America.

If you want a good GPS that works anywhere in the world for free without buying any maps you need to get a droid phone. The new Droid from verzion (the incredible) is going to have free GPS with google earth. You can even use the satellite images with it.

The phone comes out April 29th and I have my eye on this for a while.

AFAIK, my friend has released a GPS app on the iPhone as well. I don't recall the name, but I recall that it's really light weight and has features such as 3D zoom and such. However, it's not like a car GPS which tells you things in real time. It's more like... a 3D map that says where you are.

The new droid phone works like a normal GPS

I assume apple has something similar?

How much is a droid phone without a contract anyways?
