Do you think you'd be able to win, if you had a katana, against...
SeventyX7:
Lions - C'mon, multiple lions? Yeah right, you're dead.
Bear - No way, these will kill you in a swipe. Their hide is too tough for katanas. Bear protective gear is more expensive than shark protective gear.
Elephant - Katanas are a slashing weapon. You'd need something with more stabbing power, and to be really tall to get at the throat. If it was a BROAD sword I bet I could kill an elephant maybe.
Talapus:
This reminds me of when I was caught face to face with a cougar at 15m with nothing but a 9cm knife. I managed to slowly back away and avoid a confrontation, but I started carrying a pistol when outdoors shortly there after.
The grizzlies and especially the moose around here are far more of a threat than cougars (which I rank alongside the black bears and wolves), but it still scared the shit out of me. When I thought I was far enough away, I turned and ran down the trail back to my car, and drove home instead of camping.
shabutie:
I could easily dispatch all three
Elephant - Not a naturally hostel creature, therefore, I could easily deliver a killing blow before it knew what hit him.
Bear - Ever seen Grizzly Man? His problem was he thought of them as friends... And didn't have a katana with him!
Pride of Lions - Pfft, easiest one here! I mean come on! They're cats for christsake! I'm way too much of a badass to be taken down by a bunch of cats!

Katanas are actually a slashing and stabbing weapon. They are very effective at stabbing. The only way you're going to inflict similar damage with a much duller and heavier broadsword is by sheer strength. If you're built like Ronnie Coleman then you might have a shot with a broadsword, but I doubt it. The idea is to be more agile and faster than the elephant... trying to overpower something that powerful is a joke.
Besides, you would inflict much more damage with that same amount of strength if you were using a katana instead.
A broadsword is thick and heavy. It was made to fight many battles against heavy armors and clashing against other heavy weapons. You don't want something thick and heavy for stabbing, you want something thin and sharp. You want something thick and heavy for hacking; of which, a khopesh (or an axe) would be more suited to the task than a broadsword (though standing there and swinging with all your might is going to get you killed). Though to be honest, if we're going to pick and choose martial weapons, then you'd be better off with a spear, or pudao.
I also believe a proper katana wielded correctly could easily damage a bear. The fact is, they use a lot of strength and the more strength put on a very sharp object, the better that sharp object becomes. It's sort of like a piece of straw going through a telephone pole during a tornado. Normally this would not be possible, but if you put enough power into something, it can do scary things. In old times katanas were graded by how many prisoners it could cut through in a single swing. The good ones were usually graded around 5, the best recorded was 7. Do you really think a sword that can slice through 7 people in one swing couldn't cut through a bear? The only limitation on what it can cut is the strength you can put behind it.
I think a bear is actually a great enemy. With the power it puts behind a swing, if you connect your blade, then the bear is going to be left dismembered. Cutting through its dense muscle and bone with your own swing would be harder. A bear is quite stupid in a sword fight though... it exposes all of its vital points (and the belly is the softest spot on most animals). A low slash to its groin could leave it bleeding out within 2 minutes. But that's either going to piss it off a lot, or it's going to decide fighting you isn't worth its life. Either way, it would die... The question would be if it's taking you with it. I wouldn't really want to take that kinda chance though... I'd either go for a more instant fatal strike or ensure that I can get in strikes without taking a blow myself. If you can do this against swords, a paw shouldn't be so hard. Although, trying to block it with the sword is going to knock you down and probably knock the sword out of your hands. Bears aren't exactly very tricky in their technique, so if you meet its swing then chances are even if it does knock you back, it'll wound the bear badly, if not take off the limb entirely. You'll just have to recover quickly... Although, a bear missing an arm probably won't be so eager to keep fighting you.

I would sell the katana and buy lots and lots of peanuts and other food that elephants enjoy. Then I would befriend the elephant and tell him that if he can help me with my bear and lion problem, I will feed him peanuts and whatever else it is that elephants like. If the elephant ever turned on me, I would send him to Norway. Problem solved.
