On to new prob: SEEing avatar(s) *sigh*
« on: May 14, 2010, 12:09:02 AM »

I can see my avatar in avatar page and @ top of my user page, so I know it was uploaded correctly (tnx for help in that area), but still have a *different* problem (which I've sorta ignored up till now).  I.e. has existed for a while.

I see no avatar images on the tracker pages other than the girl-w/pigtails-generic avatar.
I see torrent-description images and the top banner.
I just don't see anyone's  personal avatars.

Looking @ code, I see:
   <div class="comment_avatar">
      <img src="/images/pixel.gif" alt="avatar" id="avatar_325383" style="width: 100px;" />
   </div>
For where it tries to display avatars in the tracker. Um...problem is that is is not displaying a post-specific gif.  It appears to be using some dynamic class_id styling that is probably supposed to set the image to the correct image, but it doesn't appear to be working all the time.

Have "AdBlockPlus" set to "off" (using Firefox), and no-script shows nothing blocked on page.

Ideas? (I'm assuming this works for most other people)?

tnx,
A*a

i'm pretty sure it's a problem with your adblock/noscript/whatever else you have around that might block things (AV...)

Did you even set it up and submit at your user tracker settings?

No AV.

I tried to be clear in original post.  Adblock is OFF.  Noscript says all scripts on the page are permitted.
AFAIK, those are the only things that should be able to block my FFx content.

Just tried it on FFx running on different OS (linux).  Same problem.  Thought it might have been my
proxy (squid)...but the FFx on the linux box is on an edge system, so tried direct...same problem.  Also
tried permitting ALL scripts to run (i.e. effectively disabling NoScript).  Nada.

Still puzzled.

NOTE:  Just configed a copy of IE to work and it shows the images...so this is somehow something
peculiar to both my copies of FF on two different OS's....(they don't share the same setup dirs....
and don't have exact same extensions, but there is some overlap...maybe's buried in there...)
So have a starting point to debug this problem ... weird I'd get this and no one else has seen it...but
such is normal, I suppose for me...
*sigh*

to vuzodome:
    _nobody's_ avatar displays (cept the 'generic' cute, girl-in-pigtails (looks like power uploader to me! :-) that's shown for those w/o avatars.
I used to see her beside my name, now see a blank area (meaning: user has custom avatar, but you don't see it).

Have you tried to hit ctrl+f5 (or whatver
it could be if you have a mac) ?

It'll load the page ignoring anything that
is already cached on your computer.

Have done that and run it in safe-mode with all extensions disabled -- same thing.  Must be something in my settings so next thing to do is to create a new profile or new user -- a bit more work than I want to get into right now.  I'm having some disk instability issues that are weighing a bit on my mind right now, so I don't want to get too overloaded, so it'll go on the queue... :-)

if avatars where disabled in the settings the user wouldn't be able to see the placeholder avatars.

What 'it' do you need to setup to view other people's avatars and under what conditions does the generic avatar display (for those who haven't assigned one yet) while a blank space shows up for those who have?

That you read the other thread is clear, and thus you know that blubart finished the setup of my avatar's uploading.

What else, are you saying needs to be done, in order to enable displaying of avatars in Firefox when they display properly in IE?

Sorry if I don't want to run around reading useful information scattered all over the place.

Check options -> content -> load images automatically -> exceptions.

That(^), actually was useful comment, but, alas, isn't applicable here -- I have no exceptions listed there.

The weird thing I noticed was that when it displayed a page that should have had many pictures on them -- I saw multiple references to image-storage sites flash by at the bottom of the screen -- saying it was loading something from imageshack..or similarly named sites.   I.e. it appeared to be going out to the websites and loading the images, but then not displaying them (like a display:none) was in effect (but I haven't examined the code under firebug to see if that might be the case).

But whatever it is, it isn't extension related, as 'safemode' showed the same symptoms.

You seem to be the first and only person experiencing this problem. Have you tried a fresh installation of Firefox or another browser (Chrome, Safari and Opera are popular alternatives) just to check?

I can see it. Try clearing the cache?

My javascript permissions are, perhaps, a bit less lenient than most.

The website was hitting a security restriction in my browser settings. It displays a single pixel image then later goes back and tries to modify that image with the avatar using javascript.  My settings prohibited scripts modifying images.  I see no reason to continue that policy at this point, so turning off that javascript restriction allows the modification and allows the image to display.

It works in most browsers, as most browsers don't have such restrictions active (if available), but one part of my background was security, so I can say it's a holdover from a more paranoid time.   Will probably leave that feature enabled from now on, as I don't see it being a large security risk but does cause some compatibility issues with this website.  Never have run into a situation where that security policy was triggered.  Most interesting.

Anyway -- mystery solved.

Thanks for all who helped with suggestions -- it kept pushing me to break it down and finally find the problem.
