Sorry if I don't want to run around reading useful information scattered all over the place.

Check options -> content -> load images automatically -> exceptions.

That(^), actually was useful comment, but, alas, isn't applicable here -- I have no exceptions listed there.

The weird thing I noticed was that when it displayed a page that should have had many pictures on them -- I saw multiple references to image-storage sites flash by at the bottom of the screen -- saying it was loading something from imageshack..or similarly named sites.   I.e. it appeared to be going out to the websites and loading the images, but then not displaying them (like a display:none) was in effect (but I haven't examined the code under firebug to see if that might be the case).

But whatever it is, it isn't extension related, as 'safemode' showed the same symptoms.

You seem to be the first and only person experiencing this problem. Have you tried a fresh installation of Firefox or another browser (Chrome, Safari and Opera are popular alternatives) just to check?

I can see it. Try clearing the cache?

My javascript permissions are, perhaps, a bit less lenient than most.

The website was hitting a security restriction in my browser settings. It displays a single pixel image then later goes back and tries to modify that image with the avatar using javascript.  My settings prohibited scripts modifying images.  I see no reason to continue that policy at this point, so turning off that javascript restriction allows the modification and allows the image to display.

It works in most browsers, as most browsers don't have such restrictions active (if available), but one part of my background was security, so I can say it's a holdover from a more paranoid time.   Will probably leave that feature enabled from now on, as I don't see it being a large security risk but does cause some compatibility issues with this website.  Never have run into a situation where that security policy was triggered.  Most interesting.

Anyway -- mystery solved.

Thanks for all who helped with suggestions -- it kept pushing me to break it down and finally find the problem.
