Can't use spoilers in private messages.

I can't use spoilers in private messages apparently. I get this:

I have been wanting to use them for some messages quite often but they haven't worked for months. I don't think its a recent error I think that we just aren't allowed to use them for some reason or another.

Why not just color your text white instead? Works just about as well except whoever gets the message has to highlight the text to read it.

Can also put really big gaps in the type.

I don't think its actual spoilers that people are trying to hide in PMs its more things to save space. Blocks of lists etc that could be stored nicely in a spoiler tag instead have to take up a quarter of your inbox.

One may argue that pictures etc can be stored in links rather than images and in multiple situations they are but sometimes walls etc. or even many smaller images may want to be linked in directly and a spoiler will hide them nicely.

Its not really a problem imo but I am just wondering why we can't use them is all.

I remember seeing a topic like this before but can't remember what the reason was. Try a forum search. The rule being enforced on purpose is as far as I can remember; it's not an error.

Edit: Was curious so I did a search myself, but couldn't find any useful results, oddly enough. I swear I remember reading about it before though.

The same restriction applies to spoiler tags in PMs.

Well I found this in a thread about spoilers not working in sigs. I assume its the same reason then.

This guy I noticed today has spoilers in his sig though and when viewing his profile they don't appear. Perhaps they don't appear when used in PMs as well or they can't be checked for illegal material? I dunno.

Edit: They also don't appear when you are looking at a persons last posts. That is leaning me more to the idea that they completely disappear in PMs.

There is no possible reason to use spoilers in a private message, since you want the person you sent the message to, to see everything that you wrote.
If you are not sure whether he/she wants to see or know something, then you ask first before sending it.

They probably just haven't set the permissions correctly for the bbcode.

Spoilers are not originally included in default setup for SMF forums, but added later as a plugin.
When the were transfered to BakaBT the plugin was disabled, and if you recall for a time there were no spoilers...

The new plugin that was installed to replace it, imho is crappier but it works (no support for PMs, sigs or anywhere else other then messages, no support for spoiler within a spoiler)

If you read the thread, you'd have seen several reasons why you'd want to use spoilers.
