Need to find something for my cousin.
« on: May 21, 2010, 06:45:15 AM »
Well my aunt and cousin are coming to visit next week and will be here for about a week (maybe a day or two longer).
Any i know he watches Naruto subtitled because i got him to switch from dub. (has to be the worst English dub in the history of anime that made it on TV.)
Anywayz he is 12 so I want something he can watch that is somewhat age appropriate, and that i can watch with him.
Meaning I don't want to suffer through something that is just too childish or annoying. And his mom would kill me if it's too much adult oriented.

I just don't have the time or bandwidth to filter through so much anime to find something good and appropriate.
Thanks in advance to everyone that helps.

Thank you all. I should have been specific as to why I mentioned the time frame was to finish up the series and/or movies within the week. Around 25 episodes or less, at the typical half hour episodes with OP+ED. could be more episodes if they are shorter run time.

But i see a couple i have to look up already.
Like I said not much time to look through a large list but i could use a few more suggestions.

Thanks again to everyone who helps me :)

Sword of the stranger
http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=2185

Origin - Spirits of the past
http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=3385

Tales from earthsea
http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=4193

Good movies for the whole family. Some violence but not really more than on Naruto.

Sword of the Stranger might be too violent imo. Maybe not for the kid, but for the mom.

School Rumble
Stellvia
Bamboo Blade
Kazemakase Tsukikage Ran

I think i have found some good choices with some possible backups.
Thinking:
-Stellvia
-NausicaƤ
-Hoshi no Koe
-Kino no tabi (backup)
-Origin - Spirits of the past (also backup)
(afraid school days might have something his mom would kill me for, or worse 'the look') I want to watch it my self tho.

Great recommendations thanks for helping someone who has unfortunately not seen very many anime (yet).

Moribito

Are some other possible choices as well.

Stellvia is an excellent choice. Should be fast-paced enough with an unusual profound story for its genre and young targetaudience.
Nausicaa, the first and best Ghibli-movie is never wrong. Is enjoyable even if you only get the story straightforward, but contains some things just hinted that made it very enjoyable for at least me.

Hoshi no Koe with its rather mature romance, kind of slow pace and poetic narrative is probably not suitable for both of you.
Kino no Tabi is probably too deep for a 12 year old to really enjoy.

Major is in my opinion a really good choice unless you hate sports. First season is more of a drama disguised as a sports series anyway.

I'd consider Mononoke Hime as well.

Mononoke Hime is probably more suited even, as it contains more action and is faster paced. Subconciously neglected it because of the arrows and falling head(s), but that thinking again it probably won't pose a problem for a 12-year old or mom, unless she is really strict. I always mention Nausicaa because it is a personal favourite, but then again most people like Mononoke Hime more.

Because Requiem from the Darkness is MUCH better - just check its tags in AniDB :D. Preferably the full list, including spoilers. In some respects, it beats even Monster and Berserk :).

And his mom would kill me if it's too much adult oriented.
Black Lagoon, Narutaru and Elfen Lied are also extremely good if you want to avoid being killed by killing her first through a heart attack :D.

Azumanga Daiou
My japanese is spotty at best and I still find this show hilarious without translation, even when listening to the ripped audio tracks in my car.  If I had to choose something to recommend as a show which nearly anyone from any age group could watch and potentially enjoy, it'd be this one.

Have his mom watch REC or Haibane Renmei.

Kenshin
Avatar: The Last Airbender
Boogiepop Phantom (My little brother is 12 and he dug this one)

anything Gundam or Tenchi is probably not too off.

Tenchi is probably not too off.

Are you sure ;)? E.g., this particular scene looks a lot more like "Borderline Hentai" than "Particularly Suitable for Children" :D...
