Computer Health Myths?
« on: May 27, 2010, 02:35:17 AM »
For they guys that use computers all day (Especially the office guys)

Is it really bad to wash your hands after using your computer? People keep saying that you'll get spasms or vericose veins if you do. But wouldn't you naturally get large veins from using the computer constantly anyway? Everyone i know in IT has it. People take showers after heavy work all the time and they don't have qualms about doing it, so why exactly is it bad for your arms ???

Same with the eyes, looking at the computer for extended periods would apparently make you go blind? I can personally debunk this tho, because the last time i was to an Optometrists was in elementary, and the next time i went back was after college. I've been using the same glasses and it finally got too scratched, so i went back for another pair. And according to my records, after ten years of reading in the dark, staring at the monitor for hours in bad light, etc. My eyes were almost EXACTLY the same as they were when i was in elementary. This is personal experience tho so may not apply to all. I'd like to know how it's supposed to biologically effect you.

These are things that people keep telling me over and over but no one actually has an explanation on why. ???

PS: The new glasses are slim ones, i pretty much lost my peripheral vision :-\

One exception does not break a trend. Also, there is more to "going blind" than having thicker or thiner glasses. That has to do with the shape of the eye (I think). It can cause eye strain, thats obvious. Looking at a light source is not pleasant, and having your eyes focus on something close strains the muscles.

As for washing your hands, that sounds weird.

They're called myths for a reason.

I can comfortably look at a computer screen longer than many people can read a printed book. Medical explanation, anyone?
(Now now, I love me some old-fashioned paper printouts as well, I just tend to look at computer screens far more often though.)

Been there, Although I lost my touch. . .back in the days (highschool. . .no studying) and WoW had just came out . . .hell I was spending at least 5 hours a day in wow in weekdays and around 10 on weekends (per day) . . .I didnt feel tired at all. . .
now Im on vacations, and after playing HoN for like 4 hours i have to go outside or something. . .my eyes get tired.

and that washing your hands thing. . .i know where it comes from (cold water on your hot fingers that have been working out all day typing) and its supposed to be bad for the bones. . .but pfft thats just weird

and my keyboard (if you flip it) says "some experts believe that the use of any keyboard can cause serious injury"

Considering how keyboard are more or less bacteria farms I would think the advantages of washing your hands would easily cancel out and disadvantages. If it's cold water that's the problem just wait for the water to become warm maybe?

Actually, there is. Two things in fact. One is "Health Potion" and the other is "Mana Potion in a glass bottle".

Let me comment on the veins thing -

I would say there's an alternate reason - and it's not the computer directly causing it.

Consider - that someone who sits on the computer all day - sits inside all day.  Get out of that office, don't sit in the home office - get outside.

Though, some lazy old geek nerd would not likely do that.   Need to leave the house and spend time outside.

Maybe there's an alternate use to something like the ... *groan* ... ipad.   Combine that with wimax - and you have no excuse to sit inside day and night.

I guess I view the computer different - to me, the computer is a work machine.   I do work on the damn thing.   I don't want to use it for play as well.

To me - the forest out back is my play area.   ^^

Nothing.

The only reason i have big veins on the back of my hands is because I'm skinny as hell and there's nowhere else for the veins to go.  ;D

Agreed. I was searching for a legitimate answer to reply with and instead I wanted to go poop instead.

Resolved Question
Why keyboard may cause serious injury?
once i was looking at my keyboard. i noticed a warning written on the back. it was warning about a serious injuries that may happen to hands, wrists, arms, neck or back.

The use of any keyboard may cause serious injury (that is, carpal tunnel syndrome or other repetitive strain injury) to hands, wrists, arms, neck or back. The risks of injuries can be reduced by taking frequent short breaks to get up and walk around a couple of times every hour. As well, users should vary tasks throughout the day, to avoid overuse of the hands and wrists. When inputting at the keyboard, a person should keep the shoulders relaxed with the elbows at the side, with the keyboard and mouse positioned so that reaching is not necessary. The chair height and keyboard tray should be adjusted so that the wrists are straight, and the wrists should not be rested on sharp table edges. Wrist or palm rests should not be used while typing.

Some Adaptive technology ranging from special keyboards, mouse replacements and pen tablet interfaces to speech recognition software can reduce the risk of injury. Pause software reminds the user to pause frequently. Switching to a much more ergonomic mouse, such as a vertical mouse or joystick mouse may provide relief. Switching from using a mouse to using a stylus pen with graphic tablet or a trackpad such as a Smart Cat trackpad can lessen the repetitive strain on the arms and hands.

makes me think of alot's  alot of keyboards :D

I know, but everyone keeps getting on my back about it every time i wash my hands before lunch or dinner. They're giving the strong impression that it's a bad habit i should get rid of. So i'd like to know if there's some truth to it at all. :-\

Well since most people are idiots about these kinds of things i think you can safely assume until some sort of scientific proof or idea comes to mind you can assume they are full of shit. Or just ask them to give you a logical reason why it's a bad idea to do that. If they can't just disregard it. That's how i am with myths.
